      Phone Scams Affecting Sky

A few times this has happened I have switched on the computer and the internet connection and within a few minutes I have received a phone call, one of those scam ones that tell you that you have a problem with your computer, and that they will talk you through it, and that is how they get into your computer.

I am sure Sky are aware of this, but what precautions are there, and I find it very coincidental that each time this has happened I have started up the internet.

Are these people guessing or do they know I have a Sky internet connection and could be trying to hack into my internet or is it purely based on them trying to get into my computer and nothing about Sky?

I have told them I haven't got a computer, it's a lie, but at least it stops the call from going any further.

      Any advice appreciated

      Thanks

It is pure coincidence I think, there is no way they know you have just switched on your PC. For one thing it is behind a router with a fairly substantial firewall, so they can't even see your PC. The exception to this would be if you have picked up a Trojan which calls out when you start your PC. Run a couple of anti-malware programs like Malwarebytes and Superantispyware just to be sure you have not picked up a nasty.

When I get a call like this and have time to waste, I string them along for half an hour acting like a bumbling idiot who knows nothing about PCs. Eventually I tell them someone is knocking my door and I will have to answer it. I put the phone down next to the TV and let them listen to the BBC News until they get fed up. When I don't want to be bothered I tell them I have a Mac or run Linux, at which they hang up.

I can only echo what "Isitme" said earlier.

If you've got Caller ID (and an answering machine or voicemail), don't answer calls from numbers that you don't recognise. If it's something genuine and/or important, the caller will leave a message and you can either pickup or call them back. Invariably it isn't important and they don't leave a message...

      Re: Phone Scams Affecting Sky

I just googled that number and your are far from alone.

I guess that is also another friendly way to verify whether or not your instincts are right. A quick google will often show whether or not its a fake, but sadly these people do get those out there who are less than able to protect themselves from this kind of fraud/scam.

Its always a good idea to use a service such as TPS and visit their site to see who to report such calls. Once they have sufficient evidence they can take suitable action, but it's never quick enough.

I do wonder with the current political climate whether or not these scams are funding more than just someone's summer holiday at times.

      I had him too.

Him " I'm calling about the problem with your PC "

Me " oh yes, what problem is that then"

Him " the one you reported"

      Me " I don't have a problem"

Him " how do you know"

      Me "Oh ok, which PC?"

Him " er...the one you are using"

Me " kindly go forth and multiply"

      Him " pardon"

      Me " you heard"

I've had a massive increase in dodgy calls over the past month. To the point of thinking about disconnecting the phone. I can't remember the last time i made a call on it nor the last time i actually received a genuine one.

TPS is a joke, it only works for legit companies so pretty useless when dealing with scammers.

      Re: Phone Scams Affecting Sky

We only get a few legit calls on the landline, and more often than not its the mother-in-law.

I'd be happy to have the phone removed but....

In saying that, I have a company mobile the number of which I inherited from a previous employee many years ago. Every so often I get a call from the so called 'Canadian Pharmacy' who have diddly-squat to do with Canada, telling me about thier special deals on Cialis and Viagra. I have spoken to the guy who used to have that number and although he finds it highly amusing he swears on the bible he never had dealings with them and neither have I.

I have politely asked them to stop calling me, sworn at them, done everything I can think of but STILL about once a month I get the call.... last time from Portsmouth, I think not. So somehow they are routing through a UK landline number. I bar the number, next time it will be a different number.

      Re: Phone Scams Affecting Sky

Must admit for the landline have not had any scam or ppi calls for quite a while now.
Not really had much ever on the mobile, a lot of people, businesses and work contacts have that number, but vodafone do have a good policy of removing scam numbers very easily, so it must reduce many of them.
But when I do, think as we have discussed before on here, I just answer with 'Hello, can I take your order?' It throws them everytime.

I too would love to get rid of the landline phone (just a broadband tax really now) and I keep thinking of unplugging it, but I do have some older contacts and remote family who only have a landline, no mobile and nothing I've tried makes them want to call my mobile.
With 0800 now on mobiles, which really was the last reason for me to use a landline and all my immediate family chatting with me now on chat, skype or mobile, Im not sure why I give in to those landliners. Must next time make the point to them or just say I have no landline now, but I know they will want a long explanation of how I can live without one. Also I just do not want then to suffer paying over the odds ringing a mobile from landline, which I assume is still not cheap, I'm too soft
