      Cannot send mail

      Gday all

I am visiting London for six months and am unable to send emails from my laptop. I can receive emails on my laptop
so I know that the incoming mail settings are set correctly for my ISP (TPG) in Sydney. I am using Micosoft Office
      Outlook 2003.

I tried a number of alternative settings for the outward mail server (SMTP)and it still does not work. The settings that I tried pass the first four test but failed the last test which was
to send a test message. The house where I am staying uses Sky but I note that their emails are through Yahoo.

Can anyone advise me of what settings I need to enter in the outward mail server.

When setting up the smtp server don't do the test account settings section but continue the set up process.

The set up guide is here for Outlook 2003:

      Gday Alan

Thanks for your email but I still cannot send emails. A couple of things that do not help.
It instructed me to tick Use same settings for outgoing server as for incoming server which
which cannot be correct as outgoing shows Sky whereas incoming shows TPG.
Also under more settings, by ticking outgoing mail needs authentication sets the scene
for rejection since the user and password are for TPG not for Sky.

Do you have any other suggestions?

      Re: Cannot send mail

Before you can send emails using Sky Yahoo you will need a Sky email address. Do you have one? When you do it is relatively easy to set up your account to send and receive mail using your chosen address.

If you have, or when you set up a Sky email address, follow the instructions here - Sky Help: Get emails from your other accounts

      Re: Cannot send mail

Was the laptop working fine in Australia?

As far as I know Sky do not block standard SMTP ports and you say you can recieve mail?

There is one thing that can happen, your Australian ISP is seeing the sender IP coming from an address that is not part of thier range, and are blocking it.

If that is the case, and I have had it happen to me years ago when I was with another ISP, you will need to set up an account that allows you to use your own email address, but send it using thier account. I use such a service as my outgoing email can be junked as the IP address I have does not resolve to my domain. I reccomend authsmtp.com, thier price for a year is about 20, goto thier website and take a look.

I've just read Tom's message, so that way will cost nothing! Doh!

The post from an Indian contributor has wakened up an 8 month old post and as the OP was only in UK for 6 months I doubt if he is interested.

      Re: Cannot send mail

Saw this today on the sky community, Not sure if its related to anyone's problems.

      Sky Yahoo! Email | 10 September 2015
We are aware of an issue accessing your Sky Yahoo! Mail on mobile devices. You can still send and receive emails via sky.com. We have engineers looking to resolve this as quickly as possible and we apologise for any incovenience this may have caused.

Must admit I did not even know sky had any deal with yahoo, or even that isps still offered an email service. I'm sure years ago sky offered sky branded gmail ones.
Why do they do that, as any modern device you use these days gives you a free email for life (google, microsoft or apple), not a short term isp one.
Must be a support nightmare for sky, wasted time, effort and money in my view.
Just glad I have a number of my own domains and loads of gmail, ms and apple email ids that all work everywhere without fail.

      Re: Cannot send mail

Sky at one time ran their own email servers, then moved to Gmail. Gmail ran faultlessly for some years then Sky, probably for financial reasons, switched to Yahoo. We were told at the time IMAP would not work with Yahoo, but fortunately this proved to be incorrect. Since the switch, hardly a week goes by without some sort of problem. I think Sky rue the day they switched, but will never admit it.

Incidentally although it is ISP based, Sky email is for life, once you are signed up you can continue to use it even if you leave Sky.

      Re: Cannot send mail

That's because it's Yahoo, and Yahoo is for life, it just has a different flavour wrapper on it. Sky found out it takes time, money and resources to run a mail server, that's why they outsourced it to Google in the first place I suspect they got a better offer from Yahoo. Demon were the only ISP I have used who had thier own mail servers, but that goes back to the days of dial-up; Oh and BT too i think, but by the time I switched to BT back in the early naughties I was using a seperate domain on the mail servers of the company I then worked for ( very kind of them ).
