      Three and SMTP

      Hello

Can skyusermail SMTP service offer another port other than 25 for SMTP email sending. It looks like three are blocking port 25 so I can't send emails from my iPhone when out and about.
Or can anyone offer any assistance as to why I can't send emails when out and about. (as in using 3G not wi-Fi)

      thanks

      Hi

We cannot do that in all reality, as everyone is already setup to use port 25 - Changing the port number would kill the service for everyone until they changed their settings.

Not sure if there is any other alternative, leave it with me to investigate.

Maybe you could add secure smtp as well as port 25?
      Port 465 I think
or 587 is used sometimes for Secure SMTP

      Re: Three and SMTP

I know that when I have a Vodafone email address 3 blocked it. I did try a few different options but it wouldn't work.

Could I suggest that you see if you can access your email account without going through the Sky servers, or do you connect the phone through your WiFi when you are at home?

I will point this thread out to Glenn when I speak to him.

Receiving mail is not a problem, it's sending that is the issue, so not going through the Sky servers won't make much difference, and yes at home (and wherever possible) I use Wi-Fi.
I've kind of got around it for now, by adding the three smtp server to outgoing mail options on the phone, which works, just takes ages for the skyusermail attempt to time-out.
      All help appreciated.

      Re: Three and SMTP

You have three (possibly four) different email servers to choose from. From what you are saying you have the following results so far:

      Outgoing SMTP Server Port Result
      smtp.tools.sky.com 465 failed
      mail.skyusermail.com 25 failed
      smtp-mbb.three.co.uk
      or smtp.three.co.uk
      25 works

As previously mentioned, I used to have a Vodafone email account which was blocked when I used my Three 3G dongle to connect to the Internet.

This would suggest that Three are blocking other email servers over their network. Perhaps Glenn could check with Three to see if they could unblock SkyUser's server as it isn't technically a competitor's email client.

Try reading the page linked below, it may provide an insight to what is happening:

3G SMTP Email Server Settings - Mobile 3G Broadband

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

      Re: Three and SMTP

      Thanks Scubbie

I don't use smtp.tools.sky.com because I don't like the fact the sky add the @sky.com email address into all emails (hence wanting to use skyusermail)!

I think that 3 are not blocking specific servers as such, they are just blocking port 25 for anything other than the three servers (if you see what I mean) - although I could be wrong about that.

see this article from three support (suggesting using port 587 or 465)

Three - Support - Access to Port 25

apparently it's quite common for ISPs to block port 25 (for SPAM reasons), they obviously want people to use there servers, but also Secure Ports.

anyway, lets see if Glenn can assist

      many thanks

      ummm

afaik that port should not even be reachable on our SMTP server.
