      Blue Button Search

We are frequent users of the Blue Button search function in the Sky+ EPG, and almost always the search is for the same reason: to work around the Nine O'Clock P*ing Contest. It is very cumbersome to type in the name of the programme, and should not be necessary at all. It would be really helpful to be able simply to highlight a programme in the EPG and then press a button to search for all other times it is to be broadcast. Or is there already a way of doing this?

Alternatively, it would be nice to be able to schedule a Catch-Up download of a programme not yet broadcast.

      Re: Blue Button Search

If you have a iOS or Android smart phone or tablet, can I recommend the Sky+ app?

The search feature on the new Sky+ app is far far better than that on the Sky+ HD STB and will also now allow you to find alternative times and much more.

There are some major issues in the current search function on the Sky+ HD STB IMHO. Typing in the names though will always need people to use the numeric keypad as things are with the Sky Remote Control.

Some issues are partially outside the control of Sky. For example when the latest series of Grimm was shown, each episode was called "New Grimm". This meant that you needed to type 'new' to find them. Typing 'grimm' would not. Programmes such as 'The Chase' can be found just by typing 'chase'.

I just did a search for 'RSPCA Animal Rescue' on each. On the STB I needed to put in 'rspca', whilst on the Sky+ app I could get away with 'animal res'. 'Animal' alone failed to find the series on both.

      Re: Blue Button Search

Yes, it would be nice to be able to choose to look for the search string either at the start or anywhere within the programme name.

A compromise might be for search to ignore specific prefixes, e.g. "New:" or "Live:", in the same way as the definite article is ignored. Ideally these should be tags, not part of the title text.

I do not have a smartphone.

The web browser search Sky Guide TV Listings - Sky is very similar to the Sky+ apps.

      Re: Blue Button Search

Adding the 'New' or 'Live' or 'Series n' to the title not only messes up the search parameters, but also it messes up how the programme is stored on the STB. Series on the same channel are all lumped in a stack.

ITV's Tonight series is a classic example of messing things up, so too is the BBC's Panorama series. Each uses a different programme title every week, making it impossible for someone to search through the listings in order to find them.

All this though is down to the content providers.

As for Sky's search feature, yes it would be nice to see it improved. Will it be? I don't know.

      Re: Blue Button Search

On a slightly different issue, does anyone know how to search for 'ALLO 'ALLO using the blue button?
Without the initial quote mark, it does not show up and I can't find a ' on the keypad.

      Good one. Currently you can't.

As a result I have raised this in the beta group for future development. No promises as to when it may be added.

Does either the 0 or 1 key produce any special character (such as single quotes) if they are pressed repeatedly (like on a mobile keypad or a TiVo)?

Rather ironically, the Sky+ app finds it without the preceding single quote!

      Re: Blue Button Search

      The 1 key cycles through the following: . , ; : 1

The 0 key only flicks between a space and 0.

All the others cycle through the letters and their respective numbers.

      Re: Blue Button Search

      Ah well worth a try.

We've given up using the STB's search facility and just use the Sky+ app.

But I appreciate that if you don't have a device to use the app, try using the TV Guide on the Sky website http://tv.sky.com to do the search and then do a "Record" from your chosen result (including 'Allo 'Allo).
