      Unsure about current download speeds

I have recently moved to a new build, and upon having sky moved to the new property, I was shocked to find that our estimated line speed is 1.5 meg! I thought this was daft but it was indeed true. After trying to download games from Steam I never get more than 100 kilobytes a second, which is painfully slow.

Now, the weird part about this all this is that there's a green bt cabinet 200 metres away, which has been there for a good 8 years now. However I've been connected to a cabinet that's about a mile away. What is the point in this?? And even so, surely a mile shouldn't give me such crap speeds?

Is there anything I can do to maybe change cabinets or improve speeds? I can't do anything with this speed...

      Here are the stats:

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collision Pkts Tx b/s Rx b/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 195169219 195655165 0 2364716 3914172 620:48:24
      LAN Up 5152429 2020477 0 2021153 69986 889:11:16
      WLAN Up 33725299 28557465 3 0 19153 889:10:50
      Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2162 kbps 605 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.5 dB 38.9 dB
Noise Margin 5.2 dB 13.13 dB

      Thanks in advance.

Re: Unsure about current download speeds

The line attenuation is essentially a measure of the line length. At 63.5db your line is not far off 3 miles long. For your attenuation your sync isn't too bad. You might be able to improve it slightly but not by much.

The chances of getting your line moved to a nearer cabinet for free are nil. It is possible to pay but the cost can run to thousands of pounds.

Unfortunately you may be stuck with what you have with ADSL. Have a look at the BT fibre estimation for your property (if it is in a fibre area).

Re: Unsure about current download speeds

It is more to do with the distance from you to your local telephone exchange which is the problem rather than distance to the cabinet, the cabinets are just junction boxes. Unless you are on fibre in which case the distance to the cabinet is the important bit.
Your only options are fibre if it is available or Virgin media again if it is available.

Just checked your exchange and it says Virgin Media not available but, fibre is in some areas so you will need to do a postcode search on the Sky or BT website or here https://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/main.html to check for fibre options.

Re: Unsure about current download speeds

Thanks for clearing this up guys. I rang Sky and they said that Fibre is indeed available for me, and that I'd get a straight 40 meg download speed, no questions asked. As Koala mentioned, you said the cabinet is important for Fibre. With it being 200 metres away should I not be getting faster than 40 meg? Or does it depend on the package you purchase? (I have seen the 38 and 76 meg packages advertised on Sky website).

If you use that link I posted it will show you max fibre speeds but as you say it depends on the package you select, Sky's entry level is up to 40mb.

It's not quite as straightforward as that. There's the distance from exchange to cabinet then cabinet to property to consider. For ADSL both added together is the line length. For fibre a fibre cabinet will be sited close to and connected to the normal cabinet. From exchange to fibre cabinet is fibre so distance is not material, however, you are still connected from your property to the cabinet by wire so that distance will affect the fibre speed you can get. So, for clarity, the cabinet you are currently connected to will remain the cabinet you are connected to, fibre just removes the cabinet to exchange distance issue. Moving to fibre won't mean you are connected to a nearer cabinet.

As advised, use the checker linked above - phone number if BT otherwise postcode). That will give you a fairly accurate estimation of what is possible.

Re: Unsure about current download speeds

Looks like the maximum fibre speed your line is capable of given the right package is:
With a good clean noise free line between 72mb and 80mb.
With a poor line between 60mb and 80mb.

      So pretty good either way.

Re: Unsure about current download speeds

That's quite a nice speed if you ask me. I may fork out the extra tenner and go for the higher fibre package in that case. Thanks for your help and quick replies.

For a current ADSL attenuation of 63.5db, that's a remarkably high fibre speed. Are you sure you are connected to a cabinet "about a mile away"?
