Exclamation Not Happy With Broadband Speed

      Hello,

I have had Sky Broadband for about 7 months now and upon signing up for broadband they said I'd look at an estimate of 5 - 8 Mbps based on my phone line. However, the maximum I seem to get is between 3.8 Mbps and 4.1 Mbps. Ideally, I would like 8+ as I download a lot and games for example, take an age to download!

I have put my micro filter into the test socket and did a speed test to see if it improved anything.

I have also copied the statistics of my router and would appreciate if anyone who knows the problem or could lead me in the right direction would have my gratitude.

Re: Not Happy With Broadband Speed

You should be able to get a bit more downstream.
My Attenuation is 53.0 dB and Downstream speed is 4953 kbps with a noise margin of 6.1 dB.
I used to get over 5000kbps but this has dropped over time.

Your upstream is a bit higher than mine.

Someone more technical will help, I'm sure.

Plug into the test socket and repost the stats. If the noise margin increases then it's the internal setup holding things back

Looks like you have a fault on your line. How is your voice line, any noise on it? Try plugging a corded phone into the test socket, dial one digit and listen. You should hear nothing but maybe a very slight hiss.

Re: Not Happy With Broadband Speed

I have done as you suggested, and to me I can hear a very, very faint fizzle, or as you describe, a hiss. Is this what it is supposed to be?

It is not exactly what you are supposed to hear, more what is acceptable. If you don't hear any crackling or whistling sounds, then it looks like you line is OK for voice. You could try dialling 17070 and select option 4 if you are on a SVBN line to have your line tested for noise, echo etc.. I can't remember the option number for a BT line, but I think it was 2.

If you get Zoe when you ring you are on SVBN, welcome to BT if you are on a BT line.

Re: Not Happy With Broadband Speed

So from the statistics shown, what is the best possible speed I could get and how much am I missing out on? Also, what would you suggest I do in order to try and maximize my speed potential? Common sense tells me to ring customer services up, but I'm not quite sure what to say as my line isn't broken so they'll probably say nothing is wrong.

Re: Not Happy With Broadband Speed

Estimation of your maximum rate adaptive adsl speed
      Downstream
      Attenuation
      dB Approx
      Line Length
      km
dslMAX (20CN) kbps IP Profile kbps
      BT 21CN WBC
      & adsl2+
      kbps IP Profile kbps
      adsl2+ (LLU) kbps Throughput kbps

That is your maximum expected speed according to the Kitz calculator. With a good line you could get a bit more as that is based on a 6db noise margin. With Sky and a good line the noise margin can be taken down to 3 db, which would give a bit more speed.

Unfortunately, although you have no faults on your line it looks like it is just in a generally poor condition. It is also possible you have some aluminium wire in your line which can cause lower ADSL speeds. Unless someone in Sky support can work some magic, there is not a lot you can do except move to fibre if it is available to you.:P

Re: Not Happy With Broadband Speed

Hmm, I was thinking the same too that Sky won't come out to do anything about it - must cost a bomb to get BT out to relay new wiring.

I have Fibre available to me, however Fibre seems pricey. As far as I'm aware, it's 50 installation charge and then another 15-20 a month on top of what I'm paying! Does this sound right?
