Beware of asking for MAC code - Sky might disconnect you!

Completely useless Sky again.

Ask for a MAC code because I'm considering moving to another supplier, but Sky decide to sent me a letter telling me they're disconnecting me.

Took 4 phone calls to get this sorted. First couple of people I spoke to told me I would have to let it cancel and then reprovision it (I dont think so) because the cancel couldnt be cancelled. Eventually, got someone to activate again and cancel the cancellation.

Maybe you should of just waited until you needed the MAC code(when you were going to switch ISP)

Re: Beware of asking for MAC code - Sky might disconnect you!

Not a very helpful comment and you're missing the point. Whether the OP needed the MAC at this point is immaterial.

If Sky cancel rather than giving a MAC then you're stuck in limbo as you'll probably have to wait until the disconnection before you can request connection from another ISP i.e. you'd be without broadband for maybe two weeks. If they issue a MAC then your downtime will be a few minutes.

If you request a MAC and Sky cancel you instead then they've gone against OFCOM's rules and given the customer a lot of hassle - for no good reason. As these rules have been in place since December 2006 (and guidelines before that) you'd think Sky would stick to them wouldn't you.

Think it does yes and a brief went round from Sky about the Ofcom regulations as far as I know.

Re: Beware of asking for MAC code - Sky might disconnect you!

I got my MAC key from Sky two weeks ago and have now switched to a new provider without any problems. The only thing, I did find fiddly with Sky, was that the option to request your MAC is buried so far down in the telephone options - it's almost impossible to find.

However I was weary about Sky cancelling my service, as I've heard some horror stories on this board, when people have asked for their MAC key.

In my case though, they were really friendly and sent it via Text message to my mobile phone, three days after I requested it. Now I'm off Sky LLU and back on IPStream.

Just wanted to add my own experience

why would sky stick to them? im sure they love disconnecting paying customers and losing their monthly payment. what could be better for a business? good to know OFCOM have set the rules and regulations anyway otherwise sky might disconnect all their customers because they hate all their customers and the money they give to sky.(excuse the sarcasm)

Re: Beware of asking for MAC code - Sky might disconnect you!

When some one askes for a MAC CODE the account is ceased ,
It is then during this cease that the MAC CODE is generated ,
A few days after getting the letter to inform you about the cease there should be a letter as well with the MAC CODE on it ,
Also i think sky also send this via SMS .

Are you seriously saying the only way Sky can generate a MAC is to cease the account? If it is, then they better do something about it, asking for a MAC is not and never has been notice that you want to cease your account. I am fairly sure it is against Ofcom Regulations to do this.
