Unhappy Download limits

I am a new SKY user and find that things are mostly OK except that I am having problems downloading a large [500Meg] file from Microsoft. I ran a few checks and I found I can download files up to 31.7Meg OK but 152 Meg doesn't work. [I couldn't find any in between file sizes to test with] What happens is the download appears to work up to the very last byte but even when the transferred data matches the file size the FT icon still says there is 1 second to go and it stays at 1 second to go for ever until I cancel it. Is there maximum file size that SKY will let you transfer?

Re: Download limits

There is no limit on file size, your problem is with your PC. Try clearing out all your Temporary folders and reboot your PC.

Wink Re: Download limits

Thanks for your suggestion but it wasn't the answer to my problem. I did as you suggested but to no avail. By accident I found that if I waited for 5 minutes the FT dialogue box would eventually close. The Sky FT software is either having problems confirming with the sender that the file has been transferred correctly or it is over reporting the speed of the transfer. This didn't happen with DEMON my previous provider but then you get what you pay for. Sky are a lot cheaper.

Re: Download limits

Nothing to do with Sky, I regularly download large ISO images on my connection (Kubuntu mainly, last image was 600Mb+ but I have downloaded a multi Gb file previously) and have no issues with it. You could be looking at several issues here and not many of them are to do with the Sky router.

Re: Download limits

I downloaded a fresh copy of XP Sp3 (544Mb) yesterday from MS, with no problem at all. I have also downloaded the latest distro of Ubuntu (694Mb) this morning, again with no problems. I don't think the problem is with Sky. There are several very heavy downloaders on the forum and if this were a general problem with Sky, then I think it would have been raised before now.

Re: Download limits

This is something to do with where the the file is temporarily stored as it is downloaded. The one second you are seeing is for when the file is moved from it's temp location to the real location.
You really need enough space for twice the file size. If your drive is quite full then it could run into minutes as Windows moves the file!
Give it a few minutes and see what happens!

Re: Download limits

Also make sure that all your Temp files are cleaned. The best way to do this is to do a search for Temp or Temporary. You may be surprised at what turns up.

Re: Download limits

There are 2 (main) places that Windows use for temp files:

C:\Windows\Temp
&
C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Local Settings\Temp

They might need clearing out!

Re: Download limits

CCleaner is good at clearing junk out, like all tools though be careful how you use it and what options you take for it.
