Unhappy Sky + Gaming = not so fun!

oh'k so far i have had sky BB for a few months and i am at my end with the hole thing... the family moved over from BT when our old internet would crash every 5-10 minutes (turned out it was the modem that they provided and decided to stop supporting the damn thing) so we moved over to sky from 512k to a whopping 4mb! wow i thought, my Ping in FPS's will be even lower! i thought to myself (BT had always had great ping when it came to games, from CS 1.4-5-6 and source to RA3, ut2k4 and so on... always 20-30 ping in the uk or even lower at best!) also the net drops out a few times a day and or resets itself...

then our sky was hooked up and the router arrived... hooked it up, installed the software and low and behold my ping aint so good! i am averaging 80ms to a server based in London and my best being 55ms. such a high ping/latency really effects the hole experince and i now play under the name of Pinged_Spastic so people can understand that its my internet performance that is effecting my play.

there is even a forum thread on the server/community website dedicated to Sky BB

Quote:
For anyone that uses Sky Broadband you no doubt know about the ridiculously high pings you get in online games.

Well yesterday I found the solution! [*****] is already pwning again after having his ping slashed from 106 to an average 40-46.

How you ask? Well it would appear that by default Sky uses something called interleave on their broadband service. What you need it set to is fast lane. Simply phone up Sky BB and say you are an online gamer and have a high latency/ping. They will put you through to someone who can help you and a reference number.

It literally takes a second for them to do it and you'll see the difference right away!

It has worked for both me and [*****] and we are both much happier (and better)!

You will now see me playing regularly again as before it was unplayable with the ping I had.

Good luck to anyone else with Sky BB. Hope this is the solution you've been waiting for!
I *'ed out the name for some reason! (something i will have to ask about when i ring!)

----------------THE BIT THAT I HAVE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT!----------------

so i let all the FPS stuff slide, i can manage it... hell i am still better than 96% of the people i run into and i dont take it so seriously anymore, however i recently bought Warhammer Online: Age of reckoning and it turns out i can on occasion join a server and play but most of my time is of me trying to connect over and over again. I have been through opening ports/DMZ and turned off antivirus software and even deleted it and reinstalled it! updated drivers and defraged my HDD,tonight i spent 4 hours connecting over and over to only get into the server for it to drop out and my character left standing on his own on a vast and empty plane... i have checked many forums on a solution and the issue seems to be something to do with "Packets" (i can only assume its "packets" of information that is sent to the server and back) and that information is lost along the way cousing for me to disconnect.. now i am not the greatest with computers but when i had my 256k and later my 512k i was getting better performance in games than having 4mb constant and 768 upstream constant

when downloading i get fast times and websites open on command, however playing games on PC/360/ps3 is a nightmare (yes i have all three) gears of war is impossible to play and i was lucky enough to get into the Little big planet beta but online play was virtually impossible with the LAG!

sorry for the massive rant but i had to get it out of my system before i ring Sky to try and help me out! if anyone has any suggestions here i am open to anything! i just want to play WAR

PS i am Wired not Wireless...

Re: Sky + Gaming = not so fun!

Use the Kana form on sky.com help center, contact us, ask for your max delay to be reduced. No point calling sky as a lot of tier 1 agents have still not been briefed by Sky on this.

also, be aware, Sky don't use Fastpath...only thing that can be done is ask for your Max Delays to be set to 8s...this will then give you the best pings Sky can offer...

Re: Sky + Gaming = not so fun!

Be aware that WAR in Europe is run by GOA (gaming division of France Telecom) who are frankly a bunch of useless people.

A week before the game went live they sent out approx half a million open beta keys and yet when everybody said their rubbish flash site couldn't cope we were all shot down and were told we knew nothing.

So when the site fell down becuase they couldn't cope and only 100,000 of us got in 3 days after the open beta started we had a community relations manager said the customer base was all a bunch of sociopaths for complaining. (which was later edited to back down)

Since then many people in my guild have experienced not so great network peformance and France Telecom who is hosting the game has come under fire for being rubbish.

When all this kicked off I bought a US copy and playing on the Australian servers, got fantastic pings and latency and I only get some slowdown when there is a couple of hundred people all taking/defending the same keep, all on Sky. (I'm moving to O2 next week but for other reasons)

You could always try Warhammer Alliance
they seem to be the best of the forums out there and you could possibly see if you have a problem that could be solved by the people there.

hehehe, also a new member on there, i managed to get into a nice guild through there... but the help section is where the confusion comes in because everyone has there own little reason for why it doesnt work... just look at one of the threads on the Ports, scary stuff.. everyone says somthing like "i am in IT and its ports 2000-20000" or somthing stupid along those lines...

i wanna thank you guys for the fast responses too, gonna look into the max delay and contact them

Re: Sky + Gaming = not so fun!

Just for kicks i rang sky to see about the Fast lane issue and see if i could get any information out of them, however they were unable to understand what i was on about, it was also an issue when the sky member could hardly understand my English (and i am English) i was told to see a computer specialist because everything on the sky end is "fine" however when i explained to him that i am not recieving the service i asked for and promised he went on to tell me "you can access google and sky.com... there is nothing that we can do for you." now onto filling out the form :P

Re: Sky + Gaming = not so fun!

Like I said, Sky still have not rolled out training to all agents for max delay reduction. We are basically told to tell the customer we have no idea what they are on about even if we do.

Re: Sky + Gaming = not so fun!

DON'T use the form for delays - you'll end up with an auto regrade which'll reduce your speed...

Dont wish to appear pedantic but, it's fastPATH and as iante mentioned earlier sky dont provide it. This may be why they were unable to understand what you were on about. Persevere with the kana form to get your max delays reduced. It does work and many have reported dramatic reductions in their pings.

^^^ edit - oops, I would heed that advice and maybe persevere with trying to get thru via the phone, iante ?
