Call Centres - Chat rooms from hell?

Aren't they just the worst inovation of the 21st century? Particularly the Indian ones. If that sounds racist, it's not meant to be. I'm simply stating a fact, based on my personal experiences. They're either manned by people with very braaad accents (beats me everytime) or people with seemingly good accent-free English, but turn out to be using phrases that still end with you saying "sorry, but I don't understand!"

Also, they usually seem to be just go-betweens, holding the fort till the daytime British centres come back on line. (a notable exception was Dell's Indian Call Centre, who personally handled my laptop problem quickly and professionally. - Respect.)

In my list of of hellish experiences, the runner up was Sky's Indian Call centre. You usually ring up because you're peeved - right? After listening to my winge, the polite Indian lady with the braaad accent said "please hold" After a short musakal break a well-spoken male voice said "this department is now closed" -click! Rage! Frothing at the mouth! Was I!" I rang bax

Sky does indeed have a call centre in India, also Manila, Livingstone, Shepton Mallet and Portsmouth.

My own personal advice when phoning any call centre, if its India hang up and redial. Unless of course you are a 3, Orange or Abbey customer in which case you're out of luck all ways.

Re: Call Centres - Chat rooms from hell?

This is really an accent issue. I remember once giving a talk during a weekend conference in Scotland. I was the only Englishman. I couldn't understand half the delegates!
By the time I travelled home to the south coast I not only talked with a Scottish accent, I was thinking with it! Got out of it quickly though.
The main thing is tolerance on both sides. I get very upset when someone shows irritation with me because I cannot understand their accent. And that often comes from call centres in Asia. I say nothing and hide my irritation - I just persist until my problem is resolved. I don't recall having accent problems with calls to Sky. My bad experiences have all been in connection with computer support.
