      BBC 1 Plus 1

      Hi,

I'me sure that during a speech by the BBC Director General in the recent past he said that BBC would be introducing a BBC 1 'Plus 1 Hour' channel. Can anyone confirm if I heard this correctly and if so is there any news of progress?

      Re: BBC 1 Plus 1

      I haven't read anything recently about a +1 channel for BBC1.

It was mentioned that the BBC is the only main broadcaster who doesn't have a +1 channel for their main channel now. ITV, Ch4 and Ch5 all do.

For me though the biggest potential issue would be the content when it is regionalised (i.e. local news). Would the do that same as they do for the BBC1 HD channel currently in England?

Personally I would rather the extra bandwidth be dedicated toward putting out local variations of BBC1 HD first.

I agree with the sentiment in your last sentence - a BBC 1 +1 would be useful though !

I heard it announced recently too, I can't remember who said it though, unfortunately.

It was the BBC in october last year:
BBC Director General Tony Hall announced today that Britain's most-watched channel will launch a BBC One +1 channel.

It wouldn't be a problem if things appeared on iPlayer a bit more quickly. I have noticed that from mid evening onwards things don't always seem to appear on iPlayer until the following day :-(

Not everyone is able to connect their STBs to the Internet for various reasons, so there will still be a demand for a +1 channel.

I heard that the BBC was to pull the plug on BBC Three, in fact they were / are going to broadcast it online only. But it's still on the digital TV network.

      Re: BBC 1 Plus 1

Checking the current press reports on this, the BBC are expected to submit a proposal to move BBC3 over to the iPlayer and not longer broadcast in the next few weeks.

It appears that the idea is to stop broadcasting the station by Autumn 2015.

Sure some content will move to other channels, but events such as Glastonbury ot a huge amount of coverage through having access to BBC3. This year Glastonbury was also available on BBC2 and the Red Button channel. However only BBC2 and BBC3 were able to offer HD coverage. Neither offered surround sound, offering stereo only on their respective HD channels.
