Angry Sky Talk Premium Rate Numbers

I signed up for Sky Talk. Superb deal.

I have three young children and a wife who can't resist using the phone. I asked Sky if they could bar premium rate (09) numbers. They said yes and that it would be done within 72 hours. Great I thought. I went and checked it and sure enough they were barred. I then went to call someone in Ireland and found that international calls had been barred.

I called Sky and they said I would have to get BT to bar 09 numbers then they could stop it their end. I went ahead and did this then contacted Sky again. They then informed me there was no way of barring 09 numbers without barring international numbers.

I said to Sky that this was a little silly as one of the attractions was the international calls being free. The guy thoroughly agreed and checked with a manager. He confirmed there was no way of barring one without the other.

I have now gone back to BT (which kills me as they are robbers) but cannot risk the fact that anyone in the house can dial 09 numbers.

      What a shame.

I know that's sounds easy but kids will be kids.

Too many little scratch cards and other junk mail saying that you have won loads and to call the 09 number.

I am hoping that someone from Sky will see this and be able to rum a program that can stop certain numbers.

      Cheers

Re: Sky Talk Premium Rate Numbers

Is there a reason why BT can't place call barring on the line whilst you stay on SKY Talk? It's a call feature and they offer various features to anyone with a line, regardless of who they pay for their actual calls. I find SKY Talk to be excellent value and it seems a shame if you can't stay on it just because of that... I'm sure BT must be able to put it on your line without you having to pay them for calls!

From the BT Site: "On residential phone lines BT can bar, for free, UK-based 0900-0909 premium rate numbers. But it will NOT bar international numbers. Call 150 for details."

On the trading Standards site under Call Barring ( Trading Standards Central - Trading Standards and Consumer Protection information for the UK ), SKY Talk is listed: "If your telecom provider is Sky Talk then you will not be able to access premium rate numbers."

      Hi Hermann.

I read that the other day about Trading Standards.

I did get 09 numbers blocked by BT but was still able to dial them via Sky Talk.

The only way to block 09's if you have Sky Talk is if Sky blocks them but they can only block them and international together. It is so daft.

A bit of a failing on Sky's part IMHO.

However, something which can easily and quite cheaply be overcome.

Install a Commtel Phone Guard on each working phone socket and you can allow whatever calls you want (anything you don't allow, is barred).

Re: Sky Talk Premium Rate Numbers

I actually work for Sky Talk and yes, it is silly that premium line numbers cannot be barred without barring international numbers. It is something I, and many of my colleagues, have raised in the office, since we do relate and empathise with customers and take their queries seriously.. but whether the top dogs at Sky listen to US is another matter *sigh*

By the way, if anyone's got any Qs, i'll provide some As, but keep it clean!

      Thanks for that.

Hopefully someone up high will listen. I presume it should be as simple as programming it into a computer so they can't be dialled from that particular account.
