      2,800 monthly bill

Just had my Sky cut off yesterday. Had some problem with a scratched card previously because I switch it from living room to bedroom nearly every day. Sometimes I have to insert it three or four times before it works.

I thought this was the case, so I called up Sky to ask about a new card and asked what the situation was. Thought maybe I had been caught a bit short on my monthly bills (never happened before though) seeing as the card worked the night before in the same box.

Turns out that my monthly bill is around 2,800, which I didn't happen to have in that account at the time. Sky guy says that it looks as though the bank cancelled the monthly direct debit the second time they tried to take the money (or something like that).

How is this? I don't even have a land line plugged in due to those recorded nuisance calls I have always had. Can someone advise me on what to do please?

I have seen a similar thread on here before. Basically you need to get in touch with Sky and ask them to explain/look into this glitch/misuse. You will need a letter of apology from them to show to your bank as your bank will want to charge you a ridiculous fee for the dishonoured direct debit.

Another very useful thing to do is to go on-line and take a look at your My Sky account.

Thankfully Sky does itemise all the telephone calls in the on-line account and you will be able to quickly identify where the high charge has come from.

If it is likely to upset you, I would most certainly recommend that you have someone with you when you do this.

A previous case mentioned earlier this year on this forum involved someone managing to break into a cabinet and tap into someone's telephone line. This was referred to the Police.

      Re: 2,800 monthly bill

Well I do live in a block of 8 flats where we have access to cupboards which have different stuff in. Electricity keys, booster boxes for the UHF TV reception with all sorts of leads coming out, and a couple of other boxes too.

I never noticed a telephone box there, but there could be one below waist height, where I've never really looked into. There are a few covered boxes which I figured were just electric stuff - never investigated though. Is it really possible to switch over a couple of connections and then rape someone else's telephone bill from this?

My bill suddenly going from about 60 to 2,800 is a bit ridiculous. I haven't had my eyes on inflation recently, and I figured we were not living in Zimbabwe.

So how do I approach this then? And if there is an ongoing problem, how do I stop it immediately?

      Re: 2,800 monthly bill

Before going too far, please check & check again that no one else has been in your flat and could have borrowed your phone to make the calls. It is quite possible that a teenager could have rung a boyfriend or girlfriend on their mobile, for example.

Now you need to notify Sky that you are reporting this issue to the Police as you believe that someone has tapped into your line and been making fraudulent calls. Ask for details of who would deal with such issues within Sky and ask to be passed to them. Keep a written record of all your conversations with Sky over this issue.

Next call the Police and DO NOT touch anything in that cupboard. Let their fingerprint specialists look in there and see what they can find. Once the Police have become involved, check your neighbours to see if anyone else has had similar problems.

In the mean time download the call charges as this will provide useful evidence in any criminal proceedings.

There is a useful addition to the Sky pages. There is a slider to notify you should your telephone bill go over a pre-determined figure. Set this as soon as you can. It may be locked out at the moment, I don't know.

To find it, log in to your 'My Sky' account, hover over the 'My Account' tab and select 'Bills & payments'. Scroll down to where it shows the 'Sky Talk' option and under it there should be an option for 'Call charge alerts'. Click this and the slider should appear. This slider was introduced sometime this year, but it wasn't advertised widely.

I appreciate that this is akin to closing the barn door after the horse has bolted, but if everyone, not just you and I, could use this function, then bills like yours would become a thing of the past.
