      Font size on viewing guide

I have just acquired a new Sky+HD box and find that the font size for the program viewing menu is too small. Further when viewing a box office movie that had subtitles, these were ineligible. I did not have this problem with the regular sky+ box. Can the font sizes be increased? If so, how?

Not as far as I know. I have never seen an option for this.

      Is your tv really small?

I found the higher resolution means I can read more info on the screen. The older resolution was really poor ie huge writing.

I found the same when I upgraded from my white Thompson box to a new Sky+ HD.

I had to get some new glasses to sort it out

No, there's definitely no way of changing the font size of the Tvguide or subtitles.

... which is interesting in terms of the Equality Act and goods and services.

Re: Font size on viewing guide

The new EPG design, first introduced in Summer 2012, was tested with groups who represent people with sight and hearing issues, also with people who have sight and hearing problems. Whilst it has since evolved further, my understanding is that each design has still been tested with different groups.

Please forgive me, but what size TV is being used? Also is it a modern flat screen TV or an older SD TV? Also is it a 4:3 or 16:9 TV?

Finally, how far is the TV from where you are viewing it?

Nothing guaranteed to put the back up of a person with Vi than the phrase "tested with groups who represent people with sight and hearing issues,".

If someone can find some science behind the RNIBs recommendations on minimum font size please post it here. I can't wait.

There isn't any by the way.

You test with users not organisations.

Re: Font size on viewing guide

I can't recall the specific information and the discussion is subject to an NDA. Perhaps if I can summarise the main parts of it you will appreciate what kind of testing would have been made:

When the new EPG was brought out the colour scheme was changed. This was the first EPG which Sky has developed specifically for a HD TV, where previously it had always been a compromise for an SD TV.

Things such as contrast between the colours, font style, font size and the spacing of the lines and characters will have been examined. Different sizes of TVs at different distances will have been checked and the feedback will have been provided.

I appreciate that there will be those out there with a 12" TV, but the average screen size has grown. It is not uncommon now for people to have 50" TVs at home. I am trying to encourage a friend to change her old 21" 4:3 TV to a new 37" (perhaps 40") 16:9 HDTV. She does have issues with her sight and does find it a lot easier to see my TV when she visits.

The recommended viewing distance from a modern flat screen HDTV is about 2 to 3 times the distance of the diagonal. That would mean that ideally you should be 100" from a 40" TV as a minimum, yo about 120". Of course this tends to go out the window for those with TVs in the bedroom. A 22" TV should be about 55"-66", placing it at the end of your bed.
