Do I really need a Smart TV if I have a Sky+ HD box and a Sky wireless connector?

Do I really need a Smart TV if I have a Sky+ HD box and a Sky wireless connector?

I'm replacing my ageing TV and have been looking at 46" Smart TVs from Samsung and LG. But I was just thinking...I have a Sky+ HD box, the full Sky package (with Sports, movies etc.) and a Sky wireless connector - so do I really need a Smart TV or can I get away with a cheaper, un-smart (stupid?) one? I don't play games or anything.

Would really appreciate some opinions. Many thanks.

Apart from the various iPlayers, which you get with the Sky box, a 'smart tv' can give you access to Lovefilm, Youtube, Skype, DNLA and other apps depending on the set you get. If you are not interested in these a stupid TV will do you.

Smart TV's firmware updates wont last long (and the sites they access change often), so if it has smarts then great if not don't worry. Things are stirring on this front, and I'd say a Roku3 is probably your best bet for smart functions (even sans dns fiddling) for now until android tv etc all start showing up. Lots of HDMI with correct audio pass through and the biggest highest quality screen is all that matters really.

Re: Do I really need a Smart TV if I have a Sky+ HD box and a Sky wireless connector?

I love being able to stream music from my laptop or phone to my TV or Home Theatre.

I am saving up for a 3D TV at the moment and am looking at another Samsung with the Smart TV features.

This evening I've used my current one to look at tomorrow's forecast and played some music (Lou Reed - post article soon) from my laptop.

I can also stream content from my NAS, check my Google Calendar, stream YouTube and Daily Motion videos, tune in to some Internet Radio stations and more. The newest models do even more than this.

There used to be a Google Earth app too, but this got removed.

As for the updates, I have had my current Samsung TV and HT for a good couple of years now. There has been constant updates for the apps. The firmware updates dried up a little, but I would suggest that this is more of a good sign.

The latest Samsung TVs go that much further than the model I have though. Depending on the model you could get a dual processor if you like. Also built in webcam for hand gestures and video conference (Skype).
