I thought that "The Gadget Show" report barely mentioned TiVo's superior searching and scheduling capabilities.
TiVo's Season Pass & WishList technology is far superior to Sky+HD in terms of scheduling and dealing with recording clashes - TiVo will find and automatically schedule alternative showings of programmes (even when that alternative showing is on a +1 channel or a completely different channel, e.g. ITV2 repeat of an ITV1 ) into the ToDo List (TiVo's Planner). TiVo uses prioritisation of Season Passes and WishLists so that you can decide which shows are more important than others and uses this info when scheduling. All good stuff and very handy if there are more than 2 things on at the same time on the same day.
WishLists can be used to auto record films and TV shows based on keywords (e.g. an actor's name so that you can schedule recordings of other stuff with that actor in).
Suggestions (which can be turned off if you don't want it) will auto record stuff that you might like based on your viewing/recording history.
When you press play after fast forwarding, TiVo auto rewinds a second or two before it begins to play - it takes account of your button press reaction time to anticipate what was on screen when you hit Play.
I could go on...

Re: Sky V Tivo technology
Of course, the Sky box has something that Virgin's Tivo may never have - the ability to use it anywhere in the country. I just wish that Virgin would stop going on about their box in East Anglia, because only about 2% of the place actually has cable. We have Virgin cable here in this town, and in 10 years they have connected 3 customers - the local school, the town hall, and the library.
And Scubbie - The Gadget Show is NOT in HD - which is why they only have '5' in the corner of the screen when it's on, and not '5 HD'.
