      Old Sky HD TB Box

      Hey All

I've recently upgraded to SkyQ, it's fantastic. However I now have two surplus SkyHD boxes.

A friend of mine currently has Freesat, and I know the box would work on his STB, to pick up FTA/FTV channels.

      But, my question is ....

"If I donate my box to him, how does he go about getting a SkyHD viewing card, and then enabling it?"

      Secondly....

"Can he do it without a 12 month contract?, eg just one month rolling?"

He's keen to have the basic package and the recording facilities.

      Cheers all.

You can give your old STB away but the new owner will not get any warranty what so ever and any contract purchase will be for a set period.

You can purchase a freeview card and I think they are 25 as a one off payment.

The above may not correctly answer your question!

If your friend hasn't had Sky+ before then he will have to go into a 12m contract to add the recording function to his subscription, even if he doesn't have any channels. After this 12m has expired he will be on a monthly (rolling) contract on the recording function.

There is no reason to buy a "freesat" card for almost any ex-sky subscriber as they should just use their old subscriber card unless it is very old! - card number start with less than a 4xx xxx xxx. Beyond this card number only Sky Q requires a new card starting 7xx xxx xxx.

Personally I would stick with a proper Freesat+ HD STB, if this is possible. Sure you can get a slightly different channel list with a Sky+ HD STB, but since you'll need to pay a monthly fee to be able to record on it, you'll soon wipe out any potential savings.

The cheapest in the links above I saw was 39.95, but you need to use your own memory stick or external drive for recordings. I suppose that this does mean that you can have multiple drives though, should you really wish to keep the recordings.
