      Slow download speeds

      Hi Guys,

Can someone give me some guidance pls? I have just obtained the Max package with the standard Netgear Modem/Router but I am only obtaining average downloads of 1000kbytes sec and if my calculations are correct this is about 8mb, roughly half of what I should be getting.

      Stats are:-

      System Up Time 03:19:42
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 285848 277933 0 7730 22530 03:18:01
      LAN 10M/100M 275156 291793 0 22487 8173 03:19:40
      WLAN 11M/54M 13533 8467 0 382 97 03:19:30

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 15323 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 25.0 db 13.7 db
Noise Margin 10.8 db 13.0 db

Am I completely off the Mark or have Sky sent me the wrong Router as I think the DG834GT maex out at 8mb.

Some advice would be most grateful.

      Bekradan

p.s I have used TCPOptimizer but it made little difference.

      Welcome to the forum

What is your download speed as reported with this? Are you connected wired or wirelessly? If wirelessly, what speed do you get wired?

The Sky router can easily handle 16meg.

      Re: Slow download speeds

      Hi Sturday, Thx for replying.

All tests and dowloads are from a wired connection.

The test results from your recommended test site throw stranger results back than I was previously getting. Download speeds of between 400-500kbps and Upload speeds of 650+kbps consistantly.

I have tried TCPOpt again but this little results. MTU is recommended to be set at 1500 which is confirmed in the router.

Any suggestions from here would be grateful.

      Re: Slow download speeds

To be honest I'm a little baffled. Your router is connecting fine at 15323kbps with a healthy noise margin. You should be seeing download speeds of ~13000kbps but are seeing less than 10% of this. You're wired and have used TCPOptimizer.

Sky do have an ability to throttle bandwidth but I have never heard of this happening on their LLU products. In any event, to throttle to such low levels would be ridiculous and the forum would be flooded with people complaining. It isn't. However, I think you need to get on to Sky Tier 3 to ask if they can detect a problem with your profile - errors happen. This will mean battling past T1 and T2 who may well try and fob you off with "that's all your line can handle". Ignore that - it's rubbish.

A few things you should do in the meantime:

      • extract your detailed stats so we can see if there is any obvious problem (not likely as your router wouldn't connect at the speed it is). Use Mognut's utility - details in the Tech forum sticky.
      • run netstat and netstat -e at the command prompt. There is the chance that something nasty is on your system happily gobbling up your bandwidth.
      • make sure someone on your LAN isn't running a P2P application (this would include Sky Anytime).

      Hi Saturday,

I tried Netstat which didn't reveal anything hidden eating away at the bandwidth.

I installed Mossywell' bounce software so have attached a set of full stats for you.

Looks like I'm going to have to dive into Sky's so called help desk and get an engineer to look at what's going on.

If you can decipher these stats and locate a problem your input would be appreciated.

      Many thx,

      Re: Slow download speeds

My goodness - that's a lot of errors you have there (CRCs)!
These will certainly kill your apparent speed. Have you tried plugging into the test socket?
I don't know what Saturday thinks about this idea, but looking at the stats, I'm concerned that T3 will just put a cap on (and probably interleave), so I would be inclinded to tackle the CRCs first.

      Re: Slow download speeds

Yes I agree. If you get through to T3 you'll have a hard time convincing them not to cap you.

There's still a couple of things which I find baffling:
      • how on earth is your router managing to connect at 15323kbps with a noise margin of 11.3db when you have such a high level of errors?
      • even allowing for the impact of these on your transfer rate (retransmissions etc.) I don't think that fully explains a download speed of <5% of your connection speed - can you confirm there's no P2P such as Sky Anytime running on your LAN?

As Mossywell suggests you really need to sort these errors out. I presume you must have some terrible wiring - maybe a dodgy extension?

      Re: Slow download speeds

      Hi Guys,

Thanks for your comments - didn't even realise the number of errors I'm getting. I'll try the master socket as my first port of call and then if no joy I'll physically disconnect the extensions and see if that makes a difference.

I really appreciate your help and quick response.

      Many thx,

      Bek

      Sorry Saturday,

Forgot to mention that I do confirm that no P2P software is running whilst conducting these tests.

      Re: Slow download speeds

OK I know I'm being pedantic but that answer was a bit vague.

"no P2P software is running whilst conducting these tests" is fine for most applications but I specifically asked (twice now) about Sky Anytime. This can't be turned off. It will sit there happily using your bandwidth until such times as you uninstall it. Even then the standard uninstall process leaves a number of parts behind.

Also, if you reread the posts, it was suggested you try the test socket, not the master socket.
