2nd replacement router on the blink

      Hi all,

Just had my second router let me down, first one just lost Internet sync and never got it back.
Internet works fine, as long as you are connected via ethernet.

Wireless on the other hand is pants.
Either browing the internet or trying to access other machines on my network, it is painfully slow.

Every now and again the wireless light just pulses and I cannot connect via wireless at all.

Spoke to Tier 1 support and they wanted me to uninstall and reinstall my wireless networking software on the two PC's, they were not too sure when I said that I couldn't do it on my PDA as it is built into the OS.

I was then told that I had to go through the whole trouble shooting malarky, which is a bit diffecult as I am at work at the mo.. Doh!.

I have tried everything I can think of.

      Resetting the router
      Power Cycling the router
      Reset to factory defaults
      Changing the channel
      turning off WEP

      No joy...

Now this all happened after a power cut, the router was dead after the power came back. Seemed to be ok after taking the power lead out for 30sec and putting it back in, but after a day or so I discovered I couldn't stream music to my PDA at all.

Now I have my old DG834G attached and no probs with the wireless on this one.

Anything else I can try before calling Sky again?

      Many Thanks,

      Paul.

Re: 2nd replacement router on the blink

You don't mention turning off UPnP in the Sky router. Doing that eliminated repeated loss of wireless signal for me.

The other usual suspects: mobile phones, cordless phones, video sender, wireless doorbell -- neighbours on the same or adjacent wireless channels.

Download a little utility called Network Stumbler and it will sniff out more signals than the site survey utility that came with your wireless adapter.

Re: 2nd replacement router on the blink

Thanks for the reply, it's only the Sky router that does it, an original Netgear DG834G works just fine.

Might have to try turning UpNp off (I think I might already have done that though). After reconnecting it of course.
We have a few other AP's around, but normally only see them from the first floor or loft.

We have mobile phones (2), cordless phones (2) in the house, so they might not be helping.

I still think the router is ******'d

You say it happened after a power cut,you might have got a power surge just before it went off or when it came back on thats damaged the router.

Re: 2nd replacement router on the blink

I tried to tell them that, but apparently I need to go through trouble shooting, which they say should include re-installing my wireless drivers on the laptop and Kid's PC.
Not too sure what they will make of the PDA as it's built in.
