      sorry another noob question

      HI all,

I've only ben up and running a few days with my sky broadband and so far so good. One thing i did want to know is...................the router has an inbuilt firewall apparently. Is this enough security for mr average internet user such as me.I've always ran with norton in the past but havent put it on so far.............also didnt intall the bundled MACafee either as ive heard both of these put a lot of strain on your pc.So can i get by with the inbuilt firewall alone and a weekly spybot check ??

      cheers guys

You will need Antivirus software. Nod32 is excellent!

I dont run any software firewall either, not sure whether i should but had no problems so far. I use ca antivirus which i've found to be excellent ( came free with my daughters pc - but will have to start subscribing to it soon)

Here's a few sites that test your firewall (as a guide). Its personal choice mostly. I would not like to say don't bother with a software firewall as Sod's Law says you will get infected with something the very next day and you'll blame me

Test Your Firewall - not loading for me...
      https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
Firewall Test, Port Scan and Internet Security made easy
      Sygate Online Services

But yes, antivirus software is important. There are a few free ones which get good reviews - Nod32, AVG, Avast!, ClamWin among others.

Free firewalls include Zone Alarm, Kerio, Comodo

cheers steve - i agree about not advocating not using a software firewall. Just tried the first link in your post and it came back all secure for me - so I feel ok about it now
      thanks

      Re: sorry another noob question

The advantage to using a software firewall is if you inadvertently download malicious software, e.g. a trojan, the software firewall would/should report its attempts to access the internet.
