      Question Hosting a Web Site

      Hi
I've been on Sky Broadband now for about a month, and after uPnp fix of router (thanx for that posting!) things seemed to have settled down. I've a wired conection to one PC and wireless to other laptops. With a previous isp I used to have a static IP address and hosted a simple web site, mainly used for testing.
I have found that with Sky and the Netgear router, it refreshes its extenal IP about once a day, making hosting problematical.
I have an app sitting on the PC which pings a site every hour to find the external IP and then calls sitesolutions with the new IP.
My question is, is it normal for the external IP to be refreshed so often, or is there some reboot happening somewhere?
I can view my site using the external ip, but the dns server never seems to get a chance to catch up with the changes!
As I have my own domain name I dont want to use the dyndns.org netgear provider.

      Cheers
      Tom

I don't know the answer to your question ("is it normal") but I suspect it is done deliberately to prevent exactly what you are trying to do (hosting a website/service).

You might want to check the Terms And Conditions to see if its specifically mentioned - it often is (but I haven't read Sky's thoroghly yet - T&C are so exciting I can never read them all in one go :^) ).

      Hi
Thank for that, I checked T&C's - nothing mentioned that I could find.
I also read on another thread, that Sky's external IP's have a three month lease, so I suspect something else is at play...
      Cheers

Yes, The IP will change as Sky only offer Dynamic IP's not a Static IP service!

      Re: Hosting a Web Site

Correct, but the lease on the external IP addresses should last longer than 2 hours! (Various times between 2-24 hours).
Reading around in other posts, it seems more likely that I have a noise problem, as the reconnections and renewed ip addresses occur in the evenings. The ip renewal could be a symptom of a reduced Noise Margin, and the inability of the router to dynamically relearn its stats at the lower margin, so it crashes, and reconnects with new ip.
So I need to reboot the router when the NM is low, allowing relearning at the lower margin, so it gives me some headroom for later.
I'll let you know if this cures things
      Cheers

It is more effective I find to use mognuts utility on the tech forum you can set your noise level as you wish rather than reboot eg our boiler kicks in lowering noise levels to as low as 1.5 I can then reset noise margin to 8 or 9 rather than the standard 6.9 it usually runs at.
