      Re: wireless drop-outs

I'm on router #4 from Sky and have started experiencing wireless dropouts using both laptops I have (different make and spec).

Netgear couldn't make a decent router if they tried! I'm apalled at the poor quality of the firmware and hardware.

      I think it's time I invested in a third party ADSL2+ router....

      Re: wireless drop-outs

from experience most wireless problems can be fixed with the following:

      1) check your settings (obvious I know but even the best of us can make a stupid config error)

      2) scan for other aps and pick a channel which doesnt clash (decent aps auto scan for the best channel but unfortunatel dg834's don't)

      3) update your wireless drivers. Intel (particularly centrino) driver are notrious for being full of bugs. Download the latest driver.

      4) Install the microsoft hotfixes. The WPA WPS is something of a cureall that fixes a lot of problems. Some of the others are usful too.

The Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2)/Wireless Provisioning Services Information Element (WPS IE) update for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 is available

      Exclamation Re: wireless drop-outs

      Well said.
I have had 3 friends on sky practically in tears on the phone after hours of speaking to sky re drop outs. had them up and running within 10 mins and no errors since.
I actually like the netgear router , it is not there fault that sky have decided to use such an early firmware version.
Also never had a problem with upnp.
I have found that using the wireless adaptors apps and not windows (especially Belkin) works better.
Also this is a weird one but have also found that stopping msn messenger from start-up tends to stop the router locking out when booting up.
Seems the router locks out as a safety feature and can be difficult getting reconnected without a reboot.
Also why use mcAfee , Norton etc ....CPU hoggers anyway.
I dont run windows anyway lol.
      Running Ubuntu- no drop-outs.
No need for anti-virus or firewall.
      1.3 mbps on downloads.
      XBMC on network running perfect.

      remember check your settings.
