Sky Router Setup/Configuration Guide

Connect the power, lan cable and phone cable:

It will be a good idea to connect using a LAN cable for now, if you connect by wireless and change the SSID or WPA key you will get disconnected.

Once connnected open up your internet browser and go to the following address: 192.168.0.1
You will be prompted for a username and password (they are admin - sky):

Once you login the default page is the Router Status page, this will tell you if you are connected to the internet:

At the bottom of that page you will see Router Statistics and Connection Status buttons. Clicking on them will display various useful/interesting info:

First click on Set Password on the left menu and change you default sky password to something else. Avoid using easy to guess passwords:

Click on the Wireless Settings link on the left. You may want to change the SSID to a more nicer name instead of the default SKY12345. Its up to you if you want to change the WPA key if you feel inclined.
You can also disable the wireless by unticking Enable Wireless Access Point:

Click on WAN Setup on the left menu and deselect Respond to Ping on Internet WAN Port:

If you wish its possible scale down the DHCP address range and reserve IP addresses:

Firewall Rules can be used to open ports, as you can see in this example I've opened a custom Service called VNC on internal IP 192.168.0.4 (more about custom services below this image):

If a port that you need is not listed you can create them using Services, in this example I have created two services VNC and BT on ports 5900 and 44000-44005:

And finally there is Diagnostics you can reboot the router from here and do some testing:

I joined Sky last week. The information I found on this great site helped me make up my mind. In particular I liked Ratti's guide as it gave me an understanding of the box I did not get from the Sky site - which is flashy but poor on factual information. (I will have to have a word with James at the Sky AGM about this.)

After browsing this site, self install seemed easy - even for me. The router was delivered in 2 working days. Great! But now I have to wait 11 days for BT to reactivate my line. I was cannon fodder in the middle of the fight between BT and Euro1Net.

The step by step guide that comes with the router seems at face value very easy - if it all works. I will wait for my line to be activated before loading the Sky software.

My question is this.
The tutorial here looks very different from the Sky Guide that comes with the router. Is the tutorial by Ratti for those who want to change things, not use the Sky software, or is there another reason for it being so different?

Welcome to the site murdock

The Sky Guide that comes with the router is about connecting it up to your PC and Ratti is for actually going into the router to make changes and to be honest even the novice should go into the router if for no other reason than to change the admin password.

Thanks Wheelie. That makes sense.

It is helpful to get this all sorted out before I go on holiday as I will have less than the 8 days Sky gives me to cancel.
The length of time to get the line reactivated by BT is a real drag. First it took them 10 days to clear the markers. Now it takes them 11 days to reactivate the line. At this rate it will be a month before I get my broadband back.

I am watching Order Tracking on the BT site to see if they do it faster.
