Question Re: Sky Router Setup/Configuration

Sky Netgear Wifi problem

I have just moved from Pipex to Sky. I used a Netgear DG834g and a Wireless Card Netgear 32-bit Cardbus WG511. in my laptop. Both systems worked fine with Pipex and the laptop has been used on other networks in different parts of the world with no problems.

Sky have provided another Netgear router which works fine for getting online. (It is black with no name or number) The delivery note describes it as Netgear router phase 2 UOM 1.

I am now trying to get the laptop working with the Desktop on my new Wifi set up.

On the bottom bar I have two icons one is the monitor with semicircles emanating, this has a red cross on it. The other which is normally coloured green is red.

When I go to Choose a network and pick the Sky network I get a box “Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of networks, and try to connect again.”*

The laptop I am trying to connect is approx 3 feet away from the router.

I have tried to refresh and connect again with no luck.

I have tried temporarily disabling the firewall to no avail.

When I right click the icon in Network Connections the Netgear is crossed out. When I go into Properties, General it says the device is working properly .

I have tried the following actions. The above message no longer appears* but I am still getting no where.

In Wireless Network Connection 3 properties
Wireless Networks
Advanced (Add)
Association
I have Put network name (ssid)
Network Authentication (open)
Data encryption (WEP)
Network key (entered)
I have also tried using “the key is provided for me automatically”.

When I enter the key provided by Sky I get a message the network needs to be 40bts etc.

I hope you can help please.

Re: Sky Router Setup/Configuration

I think you may be trying to use the WPA key when you are configured for WEP.

Change the setting in red above to WPA and you should be OK.

If your adapters/OS do not support WPA then you will have to go into the router settings and change the Security from WPA to WEP and create a password.

You are right my system only seems to support WEP.
I have looked into the router and it does look a bit complicated to change to WEP.
Can I mess anything up more than I am now if I change it without knowing whatI am doing.

As I understand it I go into Set Up, Wireless settings, click on WEP, I am then asked to enter a phrase which is what I assume you mean by password.

This then generates four keys, I then select one of those keys.

When I then try to connect my laptop I enter the network key provided, in the pop up box.

Re: Sky Router Setup/Configuration

Yes you seem to have the idea and no, you can't mess anything up. The router can be returned to it's default by using the reset button on the back.

Re: Sky Router Setup/Configuration

before your last message I temporarily disabled the security. I was able see my network in the list as an unsecure network. I tried to connect and this time I wasn't asked for the key but it didn't get a connection.

After a tea break I shall try your suggestion with WEP.

Re: Sky Router Setup/Configuration

I have now tried changing to WEP and when inserted the key in I got the pop up box on the laptop "please wait while Windows connects to etc" but still no connection.

At least I think there is some progress but I still don't know what to do next.

Re: Sky Router Setup/Configuration

Has the PC got a firewall on? Try disabling it temporarily.
