before I take the plunge a question on routers...

My telephone connection is downstairs and my PC is upstairs currently connected to a Telewest Cable modem through a Buffalo Airstation that sends my wireless signal downstairs to my 360.

Once I've configured my router from Sky on my PC can I disconnect it and plug it in downstairs next to the phone socket and link my Airstation to it wirelessly?
If this would work it would save me farting around getting a line extension putting in upstairs

I would say yes, however I don't know anything about the Buffalo thingy.

As long as your airstation connects by wireless or ethernet I cannot forsee any problems. Perhaps someone else can clarify?
