Using Sky Q (ER115) Router with Asus RT-AC66U (Merlin) Router

      Hi,

I have just moved my broadband from Virgin to Sky (well, still have the Virgin one atm). I have a fairly complicated network setup with my Asus RT-AC66U router (running Merlin variant by John9527), which I would like to keep on the Asus. Plus the Asus has better signal.

This was easy on VM - Just switch to Modem mode and off we go, but not so easy with Sky. Having researched, it seems there are a couple of ways to do this, but I have no success with either:

      Option 1:

      1. Connect Sky Router to "Internet port" of Asus Router
      2. In Asus WAN Settings, add the following to option 61:

      anything@skydsl|anypassword

(like above is fine - no need to sniff password anymore?)

      ---

      Option 2:

      1. Connect Sky Router to Asus Router (internet port presumably)
      2. Disable DHCP on Sky Router
      3. Disable Wireless on SKy Router
      4. In Sky Router Admin (192.168.0.1) area, add Asus Router's IP (192.168.1.1) as DMZ

What am I doing wrong? Each time I try this I get no internet through the Asus router. Connected directly to my Sky router atm, and its working fine.

      Any help would be appreciated!

      Thanks

Re: Using Sky Q (ER115) Router with Asus RT-AC66U (Merlin) Router

You would be better off just acquiring a vdsl modem device that works in bridge mode.
      Modem >asus with option 61.
Sky router does not support modem only mode. Using your own modem will remove the sky router completely from your network and avoid any odd issues with things like double natting etc.

      Ebay will find you something.

e.g hg612 3b, unlocked and non isp imaged zyxel like vmg 8324 or 8924 as both will work in bridge, 8800nl v1, v130 etc..
Unlocked zyxel vmg 3925-b10b will also provide bridge mode.
      Any questions do ask.

Thanks, but any thoughts on the above methods, and getting this working with my existing set up, so I can cancel the VM subscription, and in the meantime try to source a modem?

I have tried a temporary solution as above, but limitations in Sky's router for my Dyanmic DNS providers, and just 2 x Ethernet ports are really limiting me.

Re: Using Sky Q (ER115) Router with Asus RT-AC66U (Merlin) Router

Why not just put the Asus as a wap unit and leave the skyq as your modem/router for now. Then you could use the extra lan ports on the asus. Probably not ideal but without the separate modem I dont really see a workaround as the sky box will want to provide DNS and will not work as a modem only device.
