      Bandwidth throttling on Sky router

      Hi,

      I am new here.

I'd like to change my very old ADSL router Sagem F@ST 2504 with another one which will allow me to throttle the bandwidth of my children by their IP or MAC address. My connection is a standard ADSL one so I think I'd need a router/modem combo. Any recommendation?

On this forum I read that setting bandwidth limits is possible with routers that has Quality of Service (QoS). Is that correct?

Sky sent me a new router, the SR102 Sky Hub, because the Sagem we have does not work properly, but yet I haven't installed it because I read on Internet it's not a very good device...

Thanks in advance for your help.

QoS prioritises certain elements, i.e. VoiIP or Video streams can be given priority, it won't do much to limit their overall bandwidth. You'd need a more advanced router than the D7000. The TPLink VR900 works with Sky and offers individual bandwidth control per device. However, it's done by IP address, so if they manage to change their IP they can bypass the bandwidth control. The only sure way is a router that support bandwidth control by MAC address, even so, that can still be changed though if you know how. Only way to stop that is to setup the client PC's so the user cannot change thier IP or MAC address.

Hi marjohn56, thanks for helping me.
Will it work out of the box to connect the TP-Link VR900 to Sky network?

Re: Bandwidth throttling on Sky router

I was asking the question above because in order to replace the Sky router I've read that first I must obtain the default value of my Sky broadband connection using a password calculator. Is that true?

The router I am using at the moment (Sagem F@ST 2504) does not work properly so in the meanwhile to get a good router I am thinking to install momentarily the SR102. But if I do so will it complicate the process to obtain the hidden default value of my Sky broadband connection?? Or perhaps something will be modified and it will be then harder to replace it with a third party router... What do you think?

Good question, in your case we are talking ADSL. I know that VDSL does not require password extraction/creation anymore - ADSL still requires it AFAIK.

You can still use the password calculator to do that for you...

Re: Bandwidth throttling on Sky router

Thank you very much. I have managed to extract the hidden default value.
Do you think I can install momentarily the SR102? It won't modify anything else of my Sky account.

      Ok. thanks.
When I do a search for the TPLink VR900 on Amazon I have TPLink AC1900 written also in the title. Is it the same device?
