      Unhappy sensitive router?

      Hi

I am new to sky broadband and have recently changed over from pipex. I have set up the router and connection and everything seems perfectly allright...except that nearly every second day the Internet goes down and if it does go down it goes down for over 24 hours.

The most unusual thing is that if we touch or move the router a little the internet light on it blinks out almost immediately, this shouldn't happen right? If I connect my laptop to the router via a cable then the internet light goes out and connection is lost; if I just move the router a little to the side to get something behind it then the light goes out and we are starting to act as if even when we simple LOOK at the router the internet light will blink off. Once the internet light goes out or sometimes it is on but flickers incessantly, we have to wait till the end of next day before we get it back.

I don't have much experience of these things but when we had our draytek router and we never had this problem. Is this a problem with our router? Or with our connection? Does anybody have any ideas? We are contacting sky technical support but as everybody knows how long that takes I thought I could post here and see if anyone could help.

Have you a spare RJ11 cable you could try? Sounds like a poor connection somewhere.

I really don't know my technical stuff so I have no idea what an RJ11 cable looks like? I have just used the cables that sky provided in the box that came with the router and I have doubly tried and tried again to start over with the instructions for set up just in case I was doing something wrong somewhere.

A faulty router? Great there's only one thing to do and that means I better get through to Sky support and request another one...

I think a faulty router is a hasty diagnosis. The RJ11 cable is the one between your router and microfilter.

Ah yes I understand...the one I'm using at the moment was provided by sky but I also have another spare one that I used with my previous router...do you think I should try using that?

      Talking

Thank you so much! As soon as I plugged the spare RJ11 in and waited for a minute the Internet came back! I can also move the router freely now. Up till now I had been using another connection so far to post in this thread but now I'm using my own connection! How did you know? Is it a common problem?

It is always best to try the small inexpensive and things before the big inconveniences!
