My Wired connection is very very slow but Wireless is fine

      Hi all

I have a Setup at home , XBOX 360 , a PC running Windows XP, and a laptop running Windows 7

On all 3 devices the LAN connection is ridiculously slow. I tried it on Thursday of last week, running it directly from the test socket to the laptop, and the PC , and in both cases the LAN connection struggled to get above 1MB download speed.

The Wireless is fine , running around 12 -13 mb download speed

I cannot understand the problem, as if the router is directly plugged into the router and the computer / device , then the speed should be as good , if not better than the wireless, not worse

My XBOX is the device that relies on a wired connection, as it's the old XBOX that doesn't come with wireless capability

I noticed the other day that it was very slow, and was looking to connect but for some reason it was timing out , and although connected it was un-useable.

I checked out the devices on both the Laptop and the PC , and the network cards seem fine , both are updated with latest drivers

Of course the XBOX 360 is where I'm most keen to restore the LAN connection as without it , it's not much use to me, I only really use it to watch the iplayer on my TV, and at present it is just too slow to be able to do that.

What checks can I do that I already have not? I spent most of the day Thursday of last week trying to fix this issue, by changing filters on the phone lines, plugging into the test socket, disconnected all wireless devices , and just plugged in the LAN connection , but still the connection was very very slow on ALL devices.

I can live with Wireless on the PC and the laptop , but what I need to do is to restore the LAN connection so that I can use the XBOX

Is it worth calling Sky to ask for help? I guess I'll have to go through the tests I did on Thursday again, which is no problem , but I'm bewildered as to why the LAN connection which I've never had a problem with , is so slow all of a sudden.

Is it a problem with the router?

Seems strange that the LAN has suddenly slowed on all 3 devices

I've checked the LAN setup on the router and all looks as it should , I've not changed any settings there

So I'm a bit puzzled really

Anybody have any suggestions as to what I could do here?

I unplugged the router, rebooted it , rebooted, / turned off , turned back on, all devices and still the problem persisted ,

If anyone has any other suggestions then I'd be grateful for any

Try copying a file between the PC and laptop using a wired connection, then a wireless connection. It could be the ethernet ports on the router are giving up.

Ok, thanks , I'll do that

Can you think of any other things I could try that I have not already?

Re: My Wired connection is very very slow but Wireless is fine

Well just now I've run 2 speed tests

One with Wired, one with Wireless

The test with Wired was - running just below 1mbps

The test with Wireless was what I had expected which was 12mbps

Should I now call Sky with this information and what would they advise that I have not done already?

      Any ideas?

Re: My Wired connection is very very slow but Wireless is fine

Are you allowing the XBox etc to automatically assign the IP address/DNS/Gateway with DHCP? If you are you might like to try assigning the IP address yourself. Try for each device with IP 192.168.0.xxx where xxx is 100-200, submask 255.255.255.0, Gateway and DNS both 192.168.0.1

You could also try DNS of 208.67.222.222 which replaces the Sky server with ones run by FreeDNS.

Hi , @dms05 , thanks , how will I do this , would I do this in the router settings?

Not really needed to do this before, so would appreciate a bit of guidance

Try it on your XBox first. I don't know how to do it for the XBox but I'm sure if you Google set xbox ip address you will find YouTube videos and tutorials on how to do this. For example http://portforward.com/networking/staticip-xbox360.htm

If it improves your XBox then you can try changing your other equipment as well.

Re: My Wired connection is very very slow but Wireless is fine

      Hi again dms05

      Thanks for this

I'll try it out later on today

Just as another question, do you agree it is strange this happens on all my devices, I tried this morning on all devices the wired connection , except the XBOX and the LAN was very slow.

My concern first and foremost is why this has happened

I've never had any trouble with this in just under 4 years

I'm concerned possibly the router is the issue

And whilst I'm keen to get the XBOX working again , at least insofar as connecting to the XBOX Live service.

I would like the option of LAN on my computer (desktop) , not so worried about the laptop ,

I'm keen to understand the problem here, as it was working all fine last week , or maybe a couple of weeks ago, I am not aware of any changes that I have made , although it is possible a router update may have happened

Just trying to find out more

      Any help greatly appreciated

      Thank you

Re: My Wired connection is very very slow but Wireless is fine

I Would of said that might be bad cable but as all 3 devices are are experiencing the same fault maybe the router is dying or a router firmware update has borked the router reset the router back to factory default and try that if the above settings do not change anything

      HI Shakey1980

      Thanks

How do we reset the router to factory settings?

Is it the "reset" button on the router?
