      Nas - that old chestnut!

      Hi peeps,

      first time post.

I'm about to buy a NAS, probably the WD Live 6TB one from Amazon.
I've read some horror stories that the NAS configration is a nighmare with the Sky Sagem Router.
I am techy, I've been working in IT for over 15 years. So I understand IP addresses, DHCP, gateways etc.....

I just want some clarification - can the Sky router alow a WD NAS to work?
If yes, then how much of a pain is it to configure?

      Cheers to all.

Can't comment on the WD NAS but I have the Netgear Duo Nas configured, plug and play. I did statically assign an ip to it so that mapping drives etc was easier.
Are you on Windows 7 home. You might have to google how to make the library work to pick up the NAS drives. I posted the workaround on the netgear nas ready forums.

I too have a ReadyNAS Duo and also the ReadyNAS 6 Ultra. No problems here.

Someone did report an issue with trying to run all the different services on another brand of NAS.

Some routers do have a limit on the number of port forwarding rules which you can configure. I don't know of hand the limits for the Sky routers, but 20 is a common figure. For this reason is makes sense to group port numbers together where possible.

I've had a WD MyBook World running on the Sagem for some time. No problems, in fact nothing to set on the router I did it all from the WD setup page, including a static IP. It's running rsync and twonky media ok.

Thinking about this SB, do you have UPnP enabled?

This would certainly make it a lot easier to configure the WD NAS.

      Yep, UPnP is enabled.
SadBloke...you may have made up my mind for me, cheers.
though I may look at the ReadyNAS Duo with a couple of 3TB drives = 6TB. I guess that the Netgear may also be easy to setup with the Sagem - used Netgear stuff b4 loads of times, so so easy to use and they work everytime.

      Thanks all for the help.

Re: Nas - that old chestnut!

Brilliant! It arrived today and was a dream to setup. I just plugged it into the Sky Router and I could see the WD NAS from all of my computers.
Currently rebuilding to RAID - 15% in 2 hours.
Only snag is that my Mac has lost WiFi access, probably down to the NAS taking its ip address.
I've tried renewing the ip address on the MAC but no luck yet.
I'll reboot the Router when the NAS has finished rebuilding.
Id there a way in the Sky router(DHCP) to assign a new ip address when there are conflicts?

Yes, Advanced / LAN IP Setup. Click ADD at the bottom left and you will get a list of attached devices, with the option to set a static IP.

It's not a bad idea instead to just set a higher IP from the range in the WD 'advanced' setup. That way it will always get the IP it requests when booting up.

      Cheers buddy.
All up and running and no conflicts.
I set the ip to 254.

Now its time to set it as an itunes server etc....
Did you come across any problems when setting it up as an ITunes Server?

      Thanks all..especially sadbloke.

I don't think so, it shows up in iTunes but I tend not to use it, we use the built in Twonky server.

Have you had a look at Welcome to the new home for all things WD MyBook WE - Hacking WD MyBook World Ed, that has some useful stuff especially through the Optware packages.
