Unhappy Sagem router causing dropping out

So, after my previous 'adventure' with Sky replacing my netgear router with a nice shiny Sagem one, my internet is now intermittently dropping out. It works fine for a while, but then disconnects from the net (keeps local networking) and takes between 10 seconds to a minute to reconnect. This is annoying as an xbox user since it dumps me out of the game I was in. This happens both with the wired and the wireless connection btw.

It was working perfectly fine before, both using the old Sky netgear router, and the one I purchased from PC world to tide me over during the easter hols.

I have the line still plugged into the 'test' socket (the extensions in this house would put Heath Robinson to shame), would that also be an issue? I initially ruled it out since it was working fine over the holiday.

We'd need to find whether you're dropping sync first and foremost, which I'm doubtful of given that it'll reconnect as quick as 10 seconds.

Fair enough, I'll get that sorted. To be honest, the 10 seconds was what my partner told me, the only disconnections I've seen have been around a minute long.

I'm at work right now but will take a screenshot of the entire stats page when I get back.

And the winner is... not me, I'm guessing.

Just thought I'd add that last night it was dropping out more frequently - nearly every half an hour! Kinda irritating.

Judging from your Exchange and stats, do you realise that you are not on Sky Broadband Unlimited?

You are on Sky Broadband Connect.

Since the problem is still present on the new Sagem 2504N router I would suggest that you have a line issue. Have you plugged a corded telephone into the test socket and checked for any noise one the line?

To do this dial '1' and listen carefully. You may hear some mild background his, but if there is any distinct crackling the line is broken somewhere. This being the case call your line provider (BT if you pay them the line rental or Sky if you have Sky Talk) and ask them to get if repaired.

Re: Sagem router causing dropping out

I wasn't particularly sure which one we were on - My partner is the one that deals with utilities and bills etc, I'm just the resident IT support it would seem! The only things he told me about it were that it was up to 8mb and had no download limit when he signed up. Are you sure it's connect? He signed up when he moved in, about 7 years ago now, and I thought connect was something that had been acquired from BT in the last 2 years?

Anyway, re: the issue - Sorry if I wasn't clear in my previous post, but I meant to say the two previous routers were perfectly fine and didn't have this problem, the Sagem is the first one I've used that is doing it.

I will still give the line a check when I get home and pester BT if it's crackly, though I'm sure him indoors would've mentioned it by now if it was, he makes calls with it fairly often.

      Thanks for your help

Just tried the line now. A very, very feint hiss, but definitely no crackling or buzzing. Hmm.

      What kind of hiss?

If it sounds like a high-pitched fax machine, then this is the ADSL signal. If you are unsure, turning off the router should kill it.

My own line is totally silent, but some do have a little background noise.

Re: Sagem router causing dropping out

It's not high pitched at all... It's the kind of hiss you get with low quality tapes and records etc (showing my age here). Router had no effect, on or off.
