What are advantages of UPnP being enabled/disabled

Can someone explain in laymens terms what the advantage is of having UPNP on/off (ignoring that it makes the router more stable!!).

The only difference I have seen is that with it off you don't get the internet connection gateway icon which shows the sync speed. Surely it does more than that?

      Thanks.

It allows certain apps to connect to the router and configure it for you. It may do other things but I'm not sure?

For example the popular bittorrent client uTorrent performs better if you open a port for it. If upnp is enabled on the router and utorrent then utorrent will automatically map the port.

UPNP is great it allows nice things like spyware and virus's to open holes in your firewall. Sure its convenient when using things like utorrent, but otherwise it's a huge security risk. Turn it off...
