      Slow Wireless?

So I have setup my router on my 'Max' package, recently changing from Tiscali. I'm a bit annoyed to have to disconnect my very stable linksys wireless gaming router, to downgrade to the sky router, which is identical to a model I ditched last year for instability. (I'm not a fan of the Netgear routers, as their wireless capability can be choppy).

With my Ethernet connected I have managed to get speeds of about 8-9mb. Using broadband speed tests like ADSL guide etc.

But when I run this test on my laptop that is connected wirelessly im getting 3-4 mbs.

It says its connected at 54mbps and has excellent connectivity (I should hope so since its 30cm away ).

Im at a bit of a loss as to why im getting such slow speeds.

I have had other problems with random disconnects, but I have yet to try a few of the things mentioned in other posts so i'll raise it if I can't get it going.

(Im posting from work, when im home i'll post my stats).

      Welcome to the site Scrubbless

      Ok moved

Try changing the Mode in the Wireless setting in the router to Auto 108 and try running TCPOptimizer Optimising your Broadband Connection on the laptop as well.

Some Advice.. Its always advisable to inform your old ISP as soon as you have migrated that you have moved.

      Thank you for the welcome

I have already set the router to Auto 108 to stablise the signal on another of my machines.

I'll run the Optimiser when I get home.

On a fly by visist home last night (haha its been a busy week) I ran the Optermiser and my wireless speed picked up to 4mb, but it keep fluctuating in speed. I think its the wireless thats being flakey.

I'll have some time to work on the connection tonight, i'll post my stats then and do some tests over ethernet and wireless, see if its the net thats being unstable or the wireless. Fun and games with sky.. Without the random net cut outs i'd be happy.. since im saving money and getting better speeds than Tiscali (my previous ISP) the only saving grace it had was the router I used was really good oh well.

      Sync'd during the day:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10340 kbps 766 kbps
Line Attenuation 42.5 db 23.9 db
Noise Margin 6.6 db 9.3 db

      Sync'd just now this evening:
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10564 kbps 766 kbps
Line Attenuation 42.5 db 23.8 db
Noise Margin 7.3 db 9.7 db

As I suspected it was line noise.

Its not been up long so I won't comment yet
