Question D-link 2640S and "Unidentified Network" - Help

      Morning,

I've been searching across the forums, but this new d-link 2640S that sky have just sent me seems to be too new for everyone to have sorted out the issues.

I had been using the sky netgear DG384 until it blew up over xmas and sky eventually sent me their new d-link 2640S. So here comes the problem...

The DS384 was connected via ethernet cable to a Netgear FS608v2 to provide a wired network to a number of points in the house, which had PCs, laptops, and Xbox 360 connected. Wireless and wired all worked fine, and home networking and sharing had no issues. Then the router blew up

Now with the new d-link installed, none of the other devices can get an IP address connected in the same way via the wire. DHCP is ON on the D-Link router, and wireless works fine. Direct connection (without switch) into the d-link also works fine.

All the PC/laptops are running W7 and giving "unidentified network" so can pick up a physical connection, just not an IP address. When the switch is off, they don't get any network. I've been disabling/enable LANcards, deleting routes, etc, all to no avail. Other forums where the dreaded "unidentified network" is discussed had pointed me to w7 and home network configuration issues, but then i remembered the Xbox which also wasn't picking up an IP on the wired network. On the wireless it too is fine. So I can only think that the d-link isn't handshaking with the netgear particularly well and that maybe I should swap the netgear fs608 for a d-link switch, but before I did that I thought I might ask you guys.

      Oh and uPNP is on.

      Anyone any ideas?
      Thanks

Do you have any 'crossover' cables that you could try to connect the router to the switch?

Not at the moment, but I could make one up. But can't see how this would help?

I did get validation at one point last night, but then after reboot it went back to "unidentified network". So I sort of know physically connections are ok and talking, just the d-link doesn't seem to want to issue IP addresses through the switch.

Will try a crossover cable later tonight.

I think the Netgear switch detects cross over and uses it as a straight through, or at least I don't think it matters what cable you use.

Daft point, but have you tried plugging a PC directly into the new router, without the switch connected to the network?

If this works, check the IP address of the router is the same as your old router.

Also, since your last router blew up, is it possible that the switch has also been affected?

Re: D-link 2640S and "Unidentified Network" - Help

      Many thanks all.

I have connected laptop directly to router and it works fine and give IP in range, and defaul gateway set to the usual 192.168.0.1

I'd also agree with the cable...don't think it makes much difference.
Just getting the feeling the Dlink isn't allowing an uplink from the switch for some reason. I believe there is individual port settings with the web interface. But I can't find it, so it may have been removed from the sky firmware.

      I'll keep digging around...

Re: D-link 2640S and "Unidentified Network" - Help

I am thinking of doing the same thing myself so can you keep us updated.

If this is an issue I may piggyback from the Dlink to a Netgear router then run from the Netgear to my Netgear switches.
