      Wired connection problems, wireless OK???

      Hi,

I have been with sky for about 5 years now and had no problems until recently.
I have a Netgear DG834GT router connected to my PC via cable and my kids PC is wireless.

Over the last few weeks I have been losing connection on my PC, I cannot access the internet or the router. My kids wireless connection remains fine when this happens.

The only way to resolve this seems to be rebooting the router by turning off the power supply. I do not need to reboot my PC, just the router.

If I had to reboot my PC I would suspect the problem lay there, if I lost connection on both PC's then I would suspect the problem was with the router but as it stands I cannot figure this out. I have tried plugging my cable into a different port on the router and tried a different cable but the problem is still there.

      Any suggestions??

What OS are you using? Have you tried updating the drivers for your network card? It could be a failing network card.

Re: Wired connection problems, wireless OK???

Windows 7. Its a new PC, looked for updated drivers but I have the latest.
If it was my network card then surely rebooting the router wouldn't solve the problem would it??
No way of testing though as I don't have a spare network card.

      Thanks for the reply though.

      Found this -

If you are using a wired internet connection please check whether you face the same issue while working in the safe mode with networking.
      a. Restart your computer.
      b. When the computer starts you will see your computer's hardware being listed. When you see this information start to gently tap the F8 key on your keyboard repeatedly until you are presented with the Windows 7 Advanced Boot Options screen.
      c. Using the arrow keys, select the Safe Mode option you want.
      d. Then press the enter key on your keyboard to boot into Windows 7 Safe Mode with Networking.
      e. When Windows starts, use Internet explorer and check if the issue still persists.
For additional information refer to the articles below.

      Step 2.
If the issue does not exist in Safe Mode perform Clean Boot troubleshooting to find the root cause of the issue.

Note: When the troubleshooting is over do not forget to reset the computer to normal startup. Follow the step 7 in the above article.

Re: Wired connection problems, wireless OK???

It may be difficult to troubleshoot this way as the problem is random. Sometimes I can go for days without any problems and other times I lose connection 7 to 8 times a day.
I think I'll just buy a new network card and try that, at least I should be able to see if it's my network card or the router.
If you have any more suggestions please feel free to share.
      Thanks.

I missed your next post, no. Both machines running 7. I have 64 bit and the other is 32 if that makes any difference.

Have you tried un-installing and then re-installing the network adapter?

It could be 64-bit related, i've seen 64 bit do some funny things with certain types of networking which 32 bit doesnt do.
