Web site blocked when forwarding email?

Hi folks. A little help, please.

I am trying to forward an email from my hotmail account and I get the ‘website blocked by BSkyB firewall’ message:

      The router log shows this:

      Thu, 2010-09-02 08:05:01 - TCP Packet - Source:192.168.0.2,49412 Destination:5adfe991.bb.sky.com,80 - [BLOCK]

This is my list of blocked keywords:

      play.x3player
      ddl.vidplayer
      freaktorrents.info
      doubleclick
      thewebtimes
      bounce.com

      These are my firewall rules:

Router messages :: Router F/Wall Rules picture by Smiling_Carcass - Photobucket

It appears the Sky Router firewall is blocking itself, or am I missing or misinterpreting something here?

That is the default for the firewall. It will allow all out going traffic and block incoming which has not been requested. The message you are getting is from the Blocked Sites function. Some word in your list is stopping the request. Disable your list and you will be able to send, or check the email for words on your list.

Re: Web site blocked when forwarding email?

Thanks, Isitme. I removed the keywords/sites and the email sent. Curiously, I have 4 emails, all from the same source (info@adobe.com) with similar content (CS5 tutorials and advice). The other 3 forwarded with the blocked keywords active, only one would not. Does the firewall actually check email content and block it according to keywords? I thought it only blocked websites with the keywords in the name.

If you have info in the blocked names on your list, it should block anything with info in the name or even as part of a name. eg if you block 'sex' you will find you cannot bring up Middlesex County College : Welcome or any site with sex anywhere in the name.

I just tried putting 'sex' in the list could not even post this reply.

I understand that- you have to be very careful to block what you don't want while allowing access to the stuff you do!

What I don't understand is four emails from the same originating address forwarded from the same address to the same address with similar content and subject lines, three of which send, on of which is blocked.

Presumably the block list blocks urls, not emails based on address or subject and I would doubt it scours the content of an email for bad words.

Since all emails forwarded from and to the same addresses would presumably go through the same server with the same url, so why block one and not the other three?

I just want to know what the heck is going on!

As I say time and time again, if you want content filtering then your better off with one of the solutions which you install on your PC to block it such as Net Nanny, the routers one just isnt as good.

Re: Web site blocked when forwarding email?

The actual wording on the Blocked sites Help is-
"blocking access to certain domains (for example, pornoXXXsiteXXX.com) or
blocking sites that contains certain words (like profanity or explicit sexual material)".

That seems to indicate that the blocking is done if the site itself contains blocked words, not just its name, but to be honest, I don't really know.

Then it must be down to the Sky configuration because I never had this issue with my old Netgear from Virgin.

Why do they insist on such control? Certainly from what I read it doesn't help when you ask them to sort out a problem!

      And why the arbitrary blocking?

      This gets blocked-

      http://sn102w.snt102.mail.live.com/default.aspx?n=1625083323

      This doesn't-

      http://sn102w.snt102.mail.live.com/default.aspx?n=855047901

The only answer is that one is being redirected so quickly I can't see it happen, but the only difference is the number at the end which presumably identifies the message uniquely and changes every time which further deepens the mystery because it doesn't appear to be blocking by that url.

Have you checked the entire content of the redirects you quote, including any linked ads? If your blocked sites appear anywhere the entire URL will be blocked by the router.

That sounds like a problem with the Netgear router, though I thought they worked exactly the same way, in that you type a keyword or domain and if it appears, it gets blocked.

The links are actually live sign in- presumably they check the account status first since I don’t have to sign in every time I send or forward an email. However, since the links are the same except for the final set of numbers, one would expect each site to be affected similarly. Because the numbers change every time I forward the same or a different email I assume they are merely unique identifiers. If I copy > paste into the address bar, they redirect to the open email ready for formatting if I am already signed in and to the sign in page if I am not.

That sounds like a problem with the Netgear router, though I thought they worked exactly the same way, in that you type a keyword or domain and if it appears, it gets blocked.
Me too and I am becoming convinced this is a hi-jack issue where some nefarious website has dropped a Trojan or browser BHO or something similar and the redirects are being blocked. The few sites/keywords I have in my blocked sites are there because of a hi-jack last year, to block the redirects until I cleaned my machine. Looks like I should let this one ride until I am satisfied there are no nasties on my machine.
