According to my system settings I have SP3 running, but when I try to change the encryption from WEP it only has the option to disable the encryption.

      Re: Unable to connect

That's a bit strange. Sp3 supports up to WPA2. There is a WPA patch available, so it may be worth trying to install it. You can get it from here -
Download details: Windows XP Support Patch for Wi-Fi Protected Access

Are your adapters reasonable up to date? You may have to also update the drivers for those as well.

What you can do to get it on line is change the settings in the router from the WPA default to WEP. This is not as secure as WPA and should only be used when you have exhausted ways of getting WPA working. If you want to try it go to the wireless settings in the router and tick WEP under security. Type a phrase into the box and click generate. Select one of the boxes by ticking it and this is your pass phrase. Click Apply and copy the key into your PCs settings, you should now connect. Any other wireless devices will have to be changed accordingly.

      Re: Unable to connect

I have downloaded the patch but when trying to use it an error appears:

"Setup has detected that the service pack version of the system installed is newer than the update you are applying to it"

I have been able to access the routers settings and according to the settings there them the encryption is set to WPA, if I change it to WEP as well as my PC would that allow me to connect. Is there much difference between WEP and WPA.

Thanks for all the pointers by the way

I thought that might happen when you had SP3 installed.

You don't have to set anything in the PC except putting in the WEP passkey.

WEP is much weaker than WPA and can be fairly easily broken.

One thing that confuses me is that the encryption has nothing to do with connecting by ethernet. I think you should update the drivers of your ethernet card.

      Re: Unable to connect

Sounds very much like you've got a beta SP3 installed that has messed up your wireless connection. Go into control panel-add/remove programs and remove SP3 then redownload and reinstall it. Dont use WEP it simply isnt secure and anyone who spends 30 minutes on google can crack it if they wanted.
As you cant connect via ethernet I have my doubts as to whether having the right wireless key would help you before you get the ethernet one working.
To do the ping I asked earlier do it from the command line - Start-Programs-Accessories-Command Prompt

It probably would but take Simon's advice and reinstall Sp3. There is something wrong when your ethernet is not working either, it may be drivers or a corruption in the OS..
