Access speeds to Secure Sites painfully slow

      Hi

Have a Sagem modem and been working on Windows XP (sp2) for ages without any major issues. Last few days suddenly access to all sites that start with "https" is painfully slow, whereas standard sites load OK. It's the same with Firefox 3.6.8 and IE8.0.

Looking around the web, I see that it is recommended that I ensure that the Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) is disabled (ie unchecked) in the router. BUT, I cannot find the settings anywhere (aren't they supposed to be in the WAN Setup section?).

Whether this is currently ON or OFF is anyones guess, and also whether or not it will make any difference - who knows?

      Any help/advice most appreciated, please.

Additional info: Changed MTU from 1500 to 1458 - no difference.

Respond to Ping was found to be checked ON - turned OFF - no difference.

Using CA Security Suite with Firewall.

Additional additional info: also went to the Control Panel | Internet Options | Advanced and UNCHECKED "Check for Publisher Certificate Revocation" - someone suggested this, but can't remember why.

      Head done in!

      Hi

Yes, thanks - well aware of that issue *after* we signed up, I might add. :-)

The problem is there at all hours - even at 3am. :-(

Hi that is due to the lack of bandwidth. It was really bad this time last year school holidays. There were speeds as low as 1kbps and Sky`s sales teams still pushing the connect package and Sky have not bought any bandwidth. there is rumours that Sky may be buying some bandwidth after the summer information on the link page 165 Sky Connect Broadband - Are you being slowed down? Plus Sky have been unbundling exchanges. This is the list Sky still unbundling :: Sky Broadband :: think broadband June and July. You may find more on SamKnows - Sky / Easynet LLU to see if there is more look for the area you live in then to the right there is a list I even find on Sky`s home page that it freezes. So you cannot use the Sky site. Any contact with Sky they will ask you to do Bt speed tests and that is all they will take any notice off here`s the link Bt Updated Speed Tester

Re: Access speeds to Secure Sites painfully slow

How is it lack of bandwidth if only HTTPS access is slowed down and non-secure sites load up at normal speed?
To the OP, why are you running SP2? Also, does this happen if you disable your firewall temporarily as it may be something has updated itself and caused the issue if this was fine until recently.

Re: Access speeds to Secure Sites painfully slow

      Hi PaulSky

I have tried on several occasions to install SP3 but each time it eventually fails and I get a blue screen and an inoperable system. I have not tried to install it now for many months following "advice". Lots of time and hair pulling, so in the end I stuck with SP2. Fortunately, I always make sure a Restore Point is created before such an upgrade.

I'll try your suggestion of disenabling the CA Security Suite firewall and see what happensand let you know.

If no joy, I still am trying to find out how to turn of the router's SPI. I do have a couple of Belkin routers, so could try installing one of them but another learning curve is involved apparently (I have the info on this).

Btw, SP3 installation attempts were also tried in Safe Mode, as I recall.

Re: Access speeds to Secure Sites painfully slow

      Hi again

I tried browsing with the CA Firewall disabled, and there is no difference. Loading up banking sites (ie HSBC) and signing in to Ebay both pathetically slow - HSBC taking many minutes to just change page! This is not a Sky speed issue - it is 3pm. I just did a Sky speed test and it is logging 2720kbps download/198kbps upload. Ordinary sites (eg Google) load very quickly.

Personally, I think this is a router settings issue - something to do with packet sizes, but I am no boffin.......
