      Best UMA router

      Hi all,

I am hoping someone can help with this tricky issue.

Basically very happy with Sky and no cause to move other than to possibly get a better service for my UMA phone which is on Orange.

I would like to try using one of the specialised routers designed for UMA calling (isolates bandwidth) not sure if they would work as a direct replacement for my Sagem.

Linksys by Cisco - WRTU54G-TM Support

      Wireless-G Broadband Router

I have the network passwords/login using the links on here but they look like routers only and may need a modem?

      Any help appreciated,

      David

      Re: Best UMA router

Back again with some good news,

Through trial and error and some testing I found the DG834 v2 to be the best for UMA.

I have set one up using the basic settings from here ::. Kitz - Sky router DG934G .:: with good results, signal strength and coverage is far better then the Sagem with the BB switching over instantly when walking into the house -

I am 1.9m from the exchange so don't expect much above 2mb/s but my download speed has dropped whilst upload has gone up?

      Original Sagem

      Now with DG834 v2

I also fitted one of the ADSL BT booster plates which made no difference to the DG834 (not tried on Sagem).

Also before I used the booster plate which has a built in filter the socket never had any visible filter installed, only a splitter to allow phone/modem into the main face plate - I was wondering if this is a small filter too hence to improvement?

      It's one of these

I'll post some stats from each router if that would help tweek it back, any assistance appreciated.

edit; just to add, during my various testing (messing about) I found selecting 'b' only instead of b & g gave an improvement so this is now the same on both routers.

Selecting 'b' only restricts your wireless speed to 11mbps, you should select 'g only' this allows the full connection speed of 54mbps. That is if your device is capable of 54mbps, which most modern devices are.

You speed looks a bit low if you are only 1.9K from the exchange. Can you post your stats, preferably from the Test socket or from the Master socket?

A filtered faceplate should give better results than the small device you picture. It is hardly big enough to contain the necessary components. It may be a splitter, meant for a dial up modem.

      Re: Best UMA router

      Thanks for the reply Tom,

I switched back to 'b & g' mode and both upload/download dropped a bit, not much but feels a bit slower too, not sure if this indicates a problem elsewhere.

I removed the small splitter and replaced it with this,

Unfortunately I cannot plug the modem straight into the face plate (new one in picture) as the connector will only fit the splitter/filter to the left of the picture.

The stats below are taken form the Netgear 'router status' page but appear the same?

      Modem
      ADSL Firmware Version 3.02.06.00
      Modem Status Connected
      DownStream Connection Speed 1856 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 606 kbps
      VPI 0
      VCI

It's strange this figure DownStream Connection Speed 1856 kbps doesnt change (or is it ) as the one from speedtest.net constantly fluctuates.

Maybe I have a setting restricting it to exactly 1856kbps??

I have ordered one of these also to mount the modem in the hallway as far away from other electrical kit as poss,

Belkin CC3011AED25 7.6m High Speed RJ11 to RJ11 Internet Modem Cable

I am very pleased with the wireless coverage of the Netgear, I used the scanner software to check on neighbourhood wireless interference and changed channel accordingly but what it also showed was a second hand DG834 which I sold to my neighbour a while back was giving a 25% better signal in my house despite being 25 yards away and 2/3 brick walls!!

      Out went the Sagem

I have ordered a spare v3 DG834 which may have a different chip set similar to the one Sky used, will give that a try when I receive it but overall very pleased with the UMA coverage, hasn't dropped one call yet.

Sorry for such a wordy post,

      Re: Best UMA router

Just a thought, I wonder if it's the package I am on from Sky?

I only pay 10 (soon to be 11) a month so maybe the 'cheapie' package limited to 2mb hence the 1856kbps??

If it is I am going to feel like a proper idiot

      Re: Best UMA router

Can you post your full router stats, once form the current setup and again from the TEST socket which is behind the removable front of the master socket

How to get your router statistics

How to test your ADSL in the Master Socket

      Re: Best UMA router

And now plugged straight into the test socket although I still have to use the filter shown above as the connector from the modem doesnt fit - should I change the modem cable for one that does?

      Re: Best UMA router

Just to add, I also tried this link a while back but comes back with an error 'is this the correct number'

      Test Result

also asks for system ID which i need to get from Sky, is it unique or can I use one from the web?

Current setup direct to test socket, also bunch of uncovered wires poking out?
