      Sky D-Link Router?

Recently, our sky netgear router became faulty, so after a phone call to sky, we bought a new one for around 30 as it was out of warranty.
I installed it without a problem, but have found the wireless signal to be appalling - much worse than the old netgear router.
However, the router is a d-link router yet with the dark grey sky hd box style design - like our old netgear one, with the same sky router software.
It is called the 2640S according to the packaging, yet I cannot find any evidence of its existence except for on a wireless certification website where only its name is written.

Any idea of what this router is and if it is any good - and any help on improving the wireless quality?

      Thanks

Don't worry, most of the staff don't know about it either.

There was a briefing put out to all the call centre teams, and it had a line that said 'As you are aware, we are now issuing D-Link routers alongside existing stock'

Funny thing is, no-one apart from a few people who heard it through the grapevine knew about this routers existence, and those that did didn't know that it had been released.

      goes to show you eh.

Oh, and its still Wireless-G, its not an N-class router.

The briefing was only issued a few days ago. Looks like someone had forgotten to tell us....

      Re: Sky D-Link Router?

      Thanks for the replies guys
However, I am struggling with the wireless connection - whereas with the old netgear router I could get at least a half strength signal all around the house,
now I can barely get that even within 1m of the router, and more than 10m away the signal goes completely.
      Any ideas?
      Thanks

      Re: Sky D-Link Router?

Already tried that - I usually use it within 10 metrers of the router, and even in clear sight I cannot get enough signal to even connect to the router.

      Re: Sky D-Link Router?

Have you checked the channels in use using InSSIDer ?
      inSSIDer Wi-Fi Scanner | MetaGeek

I've read the Dlink DSL-2640 is available in a number of chipsets :
      DSL-2640R - Ralink
      DSL-2640B - Broadcom
      DSL-2640T - Texas Instruments

Apparently Talktalk have been issuing the Ralink version to their customers and there have been a number of complants on the Talktalk forum re: poor wireless range...

      Re: Sky D-Link Router?

Checked that, fiddled with the channels but no change - to give you an idea of how bad it is, when 5m away in clear sight with no nearby devices that could cause interference, I get a signal strength of less than -90dbm according to inssider - I can barely connect and when I do, the speed is reduced to almost nothing. I have a far better signal to the router in the house across the road, almost 40m away!

      Re: Sky D-Link Router?

Sounds like the same range problems some Talktalk users are having.
Have you tried testing by changing the wireless encryption to WEP or off totally ?
( Just for temp testing of course. )
If that doesn't change speed and/or range, all I can suggest is to do what I did :
Turn off the internal wireless and add an access point to provide the wireless function.
Not an ideal solution, but Wireless N access points can be bought for under 50 now.
