DLM about to start and Noise Margin has collapsed

This is a discussion on DLM about to start and Noise Margin has collapsed within the Sky Router forums, part of the Sky Broadband help category; I've ordered an NTE5 box which I will fit myself. I also have an ADSL Nation XTE faceplate that I ...

Re: DLM about to start and Noise Margin has collapsed

I've ordered an NTE5 box which I will fit myself. I also have an ADSL Nation XTE faceplate that I will fit at the same time. Reading around it seems only terminals 2 and 5 need to be used, however the electrician who wired the building has used all 6 terminals! Any idea why someone would connect all 6 wires or was he simply covering all variations for the future? Will using 2 and 5 be OK for telephone and broadband?

And thanks to all those who've enlightened me this afternoon.

Many engineers connect all the wires for the sake of tidiness. As you say, only 2 and 5 are required for the phone and internet. Removing all the wires except 2 and 5 may give you an immediate improvement. When you fit the filtered faceplate you can reconnect no 3 as the faceplate will have a filter.

Should I wait until DLM is finished before changing the NTE5 and Faceplate or would it be better to do it when I receive the NTE5 early next week so DLM can hopefully take it into account?

Considering how bad the noise is for the attenuation i'd just do it as soon as you get the NTE5, one disconnection isnt going to affect DLM too badly.

Unless you really need it, you could disconnect the wires to your extension. This will give you an idea what you will get with the NTE5. As mentioned, one disconnection is not going to make any difference to DLM.

Re: DLM about to start and Noise Margin has collapsed

I've fitted the NTE5 backplate and tried a speed test without the extension fitted. My noise figure went up to 11.0. I then tried connecting the Router direct to the Test Socket and my stats are:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 9213 kbps 921 kbps
Line Attenuation 17.5 db 10.6 db
Noise Margin 14.4 db 11.0 db

So things are looking much better! I note my Attenuation has decreased from 22 to 17. Wonder what sort of speed I should now expect?

I'd say at least another 4mb if those stats stay consistent

I recon 16mb if your line stays clear.

Re: DLM about to start and Noise Margin has collapsed

DLM seems stuck. No change for several day. However my Stats continue to be stable and are currently:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 9213 kbps 921 kbps
Line Attenuation 17.5 db 10.6 db
Noise Margin 14.8 db 11.0 db

Do I wait a little longer or should I contact Sky? If so who should I talk to?

Re: DLM about to start and Noise Margin has collapsed

Just call the normal support number, ask to be put through to the CST as DLM has left your line with a lower speed than necessary. If you are lucky you might get one of the few Tier 1 agents who can do it without passing you to CST. Tell them you are in the Test socket with a new filter.
