      Router blocking website?

      Hi, I'm a newbie so be gentle! I have a Sky supplied Sagem router and my favourite website suddenly won't display properly - with all the nice graphics gone and the text in Times Roman. There is an http500 error message sometimes, saying the site is undergoing maintenance, but I can access the site OK from my PC at work and, more importantly, from my mobile phone at the same time as the PC is refusing to display it. The kids have the same problem from their laptops with the same website, using the same router. My conclusion therefore is that this is a Sky/router problem.

      I read (but didn't really understand) somewhere that if more than one computer frequently accesses a website that the server software can put your IP address on something called a 'Band (Banned?) List', thereby preventing or restricting access to the site. The solutions were to either change your MAC address or buy a new router.

      I don't know how to do the former and really don't want to buy a new router so I'm hoping someone on here can help me!

      Cheers,

      Jaime

      P.S. - You can safely assume that I know absolutely nothing about routers or how they work or are set up in any responses!

      Re: Router blocking website?

      Hmm odd, I would probably think that the websites IP address has changed and Sky's DNS servers havent updated to the new one. The easiest way to check this is to check the websites IP address using something such as Website IP Checker and then using a command prompt (Start-Run-"cmd"-enter). At the command prompt type ping <Insert Website URL Here> it should say pingning <Website URL> IP **.**.**.**. If the IP is different from the ping than you got from the website then the DNS is your problem and you just have to wait for it to update. You can also use OpenDNS to immediately get round the issue if that is the problem.

      If that doesnt solve your issue then post back here so others can offer more suggestions!

      Re: Router blocking website?

      The only websites blocked by Sky are those peddling kid porn and disseminating racial hatred. If you have not blocked the site in the router yourself, the router will not stop you connecting. The exception to this is some overseas sites which block UK users from their service. This incliudes some TV and video sites.

      If you post the site you cannot access, others will check it for you.

      Re: Router blocking website?

      Thanks for the reply.

      I checked the web site address using the site you mentioned. I included the sub domain as follows: website.com\sub-domain and it would not resolve to an IP address. So, I just put the main website, without the \subdomain and it resolved it fine. Thing is, I can access that web site ok from my PC anyway.

      So, I didn't get as far as the next exercise. Any other suggestions?

      Re: Router blocking website?

      Thanks - the website I am trying to access is:

      Ystrad Mynach Shotokan Karate Club - Home

      P.S. - I can access the site through proxy servers, so the site itself seems fine, but I hate doing that as it's not really solving the problem

      Re: Router blocking website?

      If you look at the code, near the top you'll find:

      <link id="fw_template_file" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://ystradmynachkarate.webs.com/.design.css?r=331" media="screen">

      Change this to:

      <link id="fw_template_file" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://www.freewebs.com/ystradmynachkarate/.design.css?r=331" media="screen">

      and it works fine.

      For some reason beyond my skill Sky doesn't like http://ystradmynachkarate.webs.com/.design.css?r=331

      Hope this helps a little.

      I am no expert on this either but I think it is because "freewebs.com" is on a different server which is not blocked.

      The IWF and ISPs really need to get their act together. Because one site on a server is holding banned material should not mean that all other sites are blocked. This is not the first time this has happened with US based servers as regular forum members will know.

      Thanks for the help but you'll have to spell it out to me! Code at the top? Top of where? Please excuse my ignorance but I am no computer wiz!

      From my end it feels more like a problem with Sky because I can access the site perfectly at work and via my mobile phone!

      Anyone know how I contact Sky to inform them of this problem?
