      Snr

This has probably been asked before but i did search on the board and couldnt find a defenitive answer

as i was having problems with the dg834t sky router i have started to use my old 834g router

      my stats are

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 15227 kbps 765 kbps
Line Attenuation 18 db 4.5 db
Noise Margin 7 db 11 db

i have noticed that the nm on the download tends to shift a bit between 7 and 10 db

what i want to know is if i need to do something as i have heard that if it drops to 6 or below then it wont work correctly and i will have to reboot as it looses the connection

although the sky router had a steady nm of 13 it kept dropping out the speed causing me to reboot consistently

There is a thread on digispy where you can amend your snr using a URLinjection. Not sure if we are allowed to post it here as it tweaking the parts that are hidden in the sky firmware (it doesn't involve switching to the normal firmware thou).

i wasnt refering to hacking specifically but clarification that if the snr on a download drops below 6 that when problems occur and my questions relates as to why my snr deviates by 4 db frequently and sometimes goes to 13

what would be the right snr then ?

the sky router produced the following

Line Attenuation 20.0 db 10.9 db
Noise Margin 13.8 db 12.8 db

but my old router the 834 produced

Line Attenuation 18 db 4.5 db
Noise Margin 7 db 11 db

so between the 2 routers there is quite a difference

Outside of hacking then, what else is on your phoneline? What sort of extensions and devices (sky digibox, phone) are connected and what sort of filtering is in place (microfilter, faceplate)?

Sometimes the amount of interference will vary a lot from one time of day to another. I remember trying to get an experiment done in a physics lab next to a police station with a big transmitter outside. Things would tend to get a bit busy on Friday afternoons!

      Hi,

New here to the forums but thought I may be able to share a little something I found on another forums I frequent.
I was having constant connectivity loss with my new Sky Router, and part of my fault finding process this link was given to me with regards to the phone socket and Line noise. Give it a try, I had the following:
      Before:
Line Attenuation: 38.5db downstream, 21.4db Upstream
Noise Margin: 7.3db Downstream, 10.4db Upstream
      13492Kbps downstream, 766 Kbps upstream

      to

      after:
Line Attenuation: 38.5db downstream, 21.4db Upstream
Noise Margin: 7.1db Downstream, 8.9db Upstream
      13563Kbps downstream, 766 Kbps upstream

I have seen it as low as ~4db Downstream, ~6db Upstream one time.

      Hope it helps a bit
