What channel is the wireless using on the router and have you used a tool like netstumbler to check no one else nearby is on it? You may just find the upstairs PC is getting interference from another wireless source.

It should not really matter, but it may be worthwhile running it on the PC you are having difficulty with. It may be picking up an outside channel which your others are not.

i think part of the problem is people in my area switch their modems on and off so will need to monitor the channels each network is using at different times. I was having problems on chan 1 and now on chan 23 and it seems better, if the upstair pc has woreless problems again ill keep changing the channel to see if i can find a more stable one.

      many thanks for the help

That is true, many find their connection becomes flaky after 4pm, just about when the kids get in from school.

Wireless broadband is now so popular that getting a reliable connection in many places is just about impossible. Many are turning to Homeplug networks which are usually faster and more stable. They are also available with wireless which is very useful if you use a laptop.
