Netgear 934 - Mystery spontaneous factory reset!!

      Hi all,

Title says it almost all really. Netgear 934g router, maybe 2 yrs old. SkyMid. Stable connection around 4meg.

Last night, in the wee small hours, I went to use my MacBook and it wouldn't auto-connect wi-fi to the router which it has always done faultlessly. It didn't 'see' the SSID that I had renamed the router to, (one of the first things I did when it was first hooked up -- paranoia?). What it did 'see' is Skyxxxxx. After a moment's panic and a check that all the lights were on I then checked the default SSID on the router - as above -Skyxxxxx. I then used the default pass key and the MacBook connected. When I logged into the router - and I had to use the default 'admin' & 'sky' - all my customisations had returned to factory default. Channel, login pass, SSID, trusted networks, MAC address filtering... well, you get the picture.

Anyone have a clue as to how/why this happened? Is it possible that someone 'hacked' into it? I had changed the SSID & log-in pass at the same time - almost as soon as it was first set up. The p/w was an unguessable. The wi-fi pass ditto.

Any help or enlightenment very much appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, not a chance that anyone else reset it. 'Er indoors had gone to bed and:

      a) wouldn't know how

      b) can't reach the router to use the 'reset' button even if she knew it was there

I am resident tech support for all things computer/internet, she just uses it.

Has the firmware automatically updated on it overnight and forced the reset?

Not as far as I know, the firmware updated months ago. The current f/w shows as V2.02.44 which, as far as I can remember, is what it's been for a long time.

I've just found a similar thread, (funny that, thought I'd searched before posting...) so it would appear that I'm not alone. *Sigh*

      Router reset

which also links to an older thread in 2008. I'll keep an eye on it, it would appear per those threads that it is deemed by Sky to be an unexplained fault and the router replaced.

My router has also started to reset it's wireless settings, probably every few weeks.
