Taking ages to connect to Netgear DG834GT

      This is driving me mad...

Each time my Vista PC boots the network icon shows a red X for about 10 minutes - then it finally connects.

I have tried safe boot with networking and it connects quickly.

The PC is connected to the router via a network cable. I have removed as many unnecessary programs from the startup as possible as I thought it might be something to do with priorities.

Other PCs in the house connect straight away (wireless).

      Any ideas appreciated...

      Regards,
      Andrew

This points to your firewall or AV software causing a hold up. Disable them and see if there is an improvement. Using msconfig to select 'Selective Startup' and unticking 'Load startup items'. is the easiest way. If this improves the startup, enable the AV and then the firewall to find out which is causing the problem.

      Hi IsItMe,

Thanks for your suggestion. I just tried disabling 'Load Statup items' and the problem persists.

I am using Bullguard for the Firewall and AV.

The only way to tell whether Bullguard is causing the problem would be to uninsstall it completely.

There are a couple of other things you can try, one is downloading and running Malwarebytes to check for Trojans. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

The other is to check you have the latest driver for your network card. Get this from the manufacturer, don't trust the MS offering. I had terrible problems a couple of years ago when MS 'updated' my network drivers and completely killed my connection.

Unhappy Re: Taking ages to connect to Netgear DG834GT

I have scanned for viruses, uninstalled Bullguard and checked I'm using an nVidea 10/100 driver. The problem still persists with it taking 5-10 mins for the lan connection to work after booting.

Could it be some sort of IP address issue? Any ideas how I could find out?

      Andrew

Re: Taking ages to connect to Netgear DG834GT

If you are able to connect quickly in Safe Mode, that indicates some software is loading in Normal mode which is slowing it down. You could try downloading and installing Download Startup Inspector 2.2 - Startup Inspector lets you view and optionally disable programs that are currently set to start automatically with Windows - Softpedia This may show up something that is not visible in Msconfig. AV and Firewalls are the usual culprits, but there could be something else causing the problem.

Giving the PC a fixed address, may help but it will not overcome the software problem. You could also try going to the LAN Properties and disabling Internet Protocol Ver 6. this has been known to cause problems.

Thumbs up Re: Taking ages to connect to Netgear DG834GT

At last, after many weeks I have a solution!!!

After uninstalling Bullguard and rebooting the pc with no startup programs there was still the same loooong delay. I guessed it must be a Services problem instead.

I looked through all the network related Services and one of them was not set to start automatically. I changed the setting, rebooted and the network icon connected pretty much immediately

I am really relieved as this was a real annoyance as we were having to boot the computer 15 minutes before it was needed and leaving it running to avoid yet another delay the next time.

      Many thanks for your suggestions.

      Regards,
      Andrew

Re: Taking ages to connect to Netgear DG834GT

May have spoken too soon :-( The icon now shows it has connected - but still does not actually do it for 5 minutes or so. Anyone know what other Vista service might need starting automatically on boot?

It might help me if someone could post a list of the network related services started on a working pc...thanks.

      Regards,
      Andrew
