      Constant Slow Speeds

i'm helping my dad set up his new mac & he is on the sky max service with a netgear router. he's always had very slow broadband speeds. looking at the router stats they are :-

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 767 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 28.9 db 9.5 db

apart from the connection speed, which is obviously terrible downstream, how do the attenuation and noise readings look ?

and is there anything i can do to improve the situation ?

His connection is severely capped. Phone Sky and get them to trouble shoot for speed. They should pass you to the higher support who will reconfigure the connection. 7+Mb should not be impossible.

Best time to phone to get through is after 10.30pm, gives the best chance to get to CST fast.

i would also take a look in the cabling and faceplate section on this site so you get a feel for what the best set up is( making sure you have the best set up internaly with wiring and onections) this way you will have done most of the basics that teir 1 will ask/suggest

      Re: Constant Slow Speeds

in an attempt to avoid spending 3 hours on hold to support and having to explain myself to 6 different people, i sent them an email.

a few days later, sky optimised the line and my dad now has nearly 6MB - about a 10 fold increase ! (and a lot a lot faster than mine in central london.) so on this occasion at least, customer services have delivered the goods.

I have to say I have never been let down when using email to contact sky, works every time.

      Re: Constant Slow Speeds

whenever i've tried to use email to sky to resolve my own problems in the past, i've ended up being caught in an endless loop of questions and no progress. i suspected they just try to frustrate you so much that you give up. and sometimes they just get bored and stop responding.

That is true, but I have found a trick to get them to reply to your question use the broadband complaints form and this got an answer the following day.
