Noise margin drops when Mobile Phone connected

I use a Nokia N95 and connect it to my Laptop by USB to Synchronise Calendar/Messages etc. I use Nokia's PC Suite for the Synchronisation as the phone is a Symbian OS.

I've noticed that my Noise Margin decreases when the Nokia is attached by USB. I don't have to be synchronising for this to happen - it occurs if I'm just using the USB Cradle (with it's own power supply) to recharge the mobiles battery.

I've also now tried attaching a Windows Mobile v6.1 mobile and launched the MS ActiveSync prgram. During the boot process the Noise Margin does decrease a little but once up and running in ActiveSync mode the Noise margin returns to the original level.

I was wondering why this was occuring. Any ideas? Below are stats with/without the phone attached.

      Nokia N95 attached via USB
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10236 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 22.5 db 12.9 db
Noise Margin 7.4 db 20.5 db

No mobile phone attached/ WMv6.1 attached
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10236 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 22.5 db 12.9 db
Noise Margin 8.1 db 21.0 db

I get about 6.8 Mb/sec as a typical speed. Is that about right?

For the Mid package your router is connecting at the maximum possible speeds. I am not sure how you measure the 6.8 Mb/s. If you're connecting at 10 mbits (as you are) then you should expect to download at a maximum of around 9 mbits. Use a proper bandwidth meter program and download from a site that will max out your download if you want a more accurate figure.
The range the the S/N ratio dips is nothing to be concerned over.

As you are using a Laptop I assume you are connecting by wireless. If so try a speedtest on Sky User - Broadband Speed Tester with a cable connection. You should get from 8.5 to 9 Mb.

No I'm only connected by LAN cable, but yes it's a laptop.

The Sky User Speed test shows 8048 kbps for download and 504 kbps for Upload.

That is not too bad, but if you are using XP try doing the TweakTest from the DrTCP link below. If it makes recommendations, download it and make the changes.

I don't think you will improve it much, but you could have a look at the Vista tweaks on SG, they should work with Win 7..
