Re: Coming Soon: Best Router For Sky BB

this is interesting, i just got a replacement router today: netgear (v5 i guess - but where can i check?), and i used to have a sagem - and i can see big differences:

      i'm on mid.
my upstream stats haven't changed (or not much), but downstream it's a completely different story:
connection speed is up to 10237 from 9600, but what surprises me most:
noise margin: up to 13db from 7db!
      line attenuation remains at 31db.

i didn't know a modem could have such an influence on the noise margin - or is there something else going on?
i haven't replaced the cable or filter, and the sagem just packed up with the 4 ethernet lights on symptoms, and had been working fine prior to this.

If you got it from Sky will not be a V5. If you bought it elsewhere, look at the metal version label. With an attenuation of 31dbs, you should have a better sync than 10237kbps. You should have a look at your wiring. If you want help, open a new thread including your stats.

Right, I got it from Sky, Netgear V2 it must be then.
I'm on Mid so doubt I can get a better sync than 10237.

Still surprised by such a difference in stats from the Sagem.

The router should not just reset itself. The only time this might happen is if the firmware is upgraded.
You should save your settings to a file on your PC, they can then by replaced with one or two clicks.

Re: Coming Soon: Best Router For Sky BB

I have a question, my connection over the last few months m(aybe 6?) has started to drop every 2-3 afternoons / nights. This was pre upgrade from mid to everyday. My sky doesnt show dlm as done but my line went from 8188/412 to 10237/606 about a month ago.

Before this my router held the connection no problems for days. The only thing thats different is I had a conservatory fitted to the back of my house which was fitted over the cable (behind the lead flashing). Could the porblems be caused by my router slowly dying or outside noise/rein? I have an XTE2005 plugged into the master and the router sits beside that on less than 1mtr rj11 to router with NO extensions. Could it be the filter? I dont think I have any old filters to test with :s

      Any ideas?

My atten up is 32db and snr varies from as low as 4db at night to normally around 10-11db

Re: Coming Soon: Best Router For Sky BB

Reboot your router when the noise margin drops to about 4/5. This will reconnect you at a slightly lower speed, but it will then be stable. After you have done this, leave it to its own devices, don't reboot with a high noise margin or you will be back where you started. Other than finding a fault on your external line, I doubt if there is much else you can do.

      im not a nub

my router stats are listed above.... what difference does it make in this format?

      System Up Time: 72:19:35
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 2075614 2347707 0 689 3519 72:18:37
      LAN 100M/Full 1826439 1735833 0 1284 620 72:19:30
      WLAN 54M 534974 349111 0 2393 192 72:19:17

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 10237 kbps 606 kbps
Line Attenuation 32 db 18 db
Noise Margin 4 db 21 db

as i said has only just started dropping that low. and NO if i rebout it at any time regardless of SNR speed it NEVER connects slower.
