      Thoughts on Wireless with Sky?

If a tech agent advises you the following; what should happen at the very end of the call if a resolution isnt completed?

      1; Try moving the router
2; Remove any wireless devices (cordless phones etc)
      3. Change the wireless channel through ethernet (1-13) ideally 1,6,11
      4. Reset Router
      5. Update drivers for wireless on pc/laptop

If this is the end of the troubleshooting, what should happen?

Replace Router from the agent or be advised Wireless isn't feasible in your situation... if a router is a replaced and same problem... what happens? is this skys fault or just an issue that can't be worked around, advise to use ethernet...

Re: Thoughts on Wireless with Sky?

I found that the Black Netgear (DG934GT?) router supplied by Sky had an absolutely terrible wireless range. 2 rooms away, and it would drop the signal. No other local WLAN use to interfere or anything like that.

I'm assuming that it's down to the internal antenna... i know we are talking a frequency of 2.4GHz (which is microwave) and a power level of milliwatts, so hardly an earth shattering combination, but I had better on my old DG834GT, and have as good on my new Thomson TG585. Both have external antennas.

Range can be further increased by attaching a "high gain" antenna from somewhere like ebay... but dont get one with a flying lead that connects the antenna to the router or WLAN card... at these frequencies, the micro-coax cable has more db attenuation than the antenna has gain, so youre losing straightaway! If youre going to go that route, then choose one that screws directly onto the device!

      My 2 pennorth!

Thats good advice. although i do realise its not practical or desirable for some. I've found the white V1 router gives a reasonable connection in our house, I dont use it but the wife and daughter do. You could try and get one of these second hand as I believe Sky no longer supply them or failing that try homeplugs.

I have the Netgear black router DG934G and it works fine. Two laptops, 2 mobile phones and my Nintendo DSi have no problems connecting from anywhere in the house.
Oh, and we have a cordless phone in the same room as the router!
Mount the Router vertically and high up and/or try changing the channel!

Can't call me a Luddite now!

Advise to extract the username and password and get a router that has
      external antennas
